Get Ready: The Mother Trailer Unleashes Jennifer Lopez as a Deadly Assassin

Jennifer Lopez returns to action in Netflix’s thriller The Mother, where she plays a highly trained woman willing to do whatever it takes to protect her daughter. The first trailer introduces a story centered on motherhood, sacrifice, and revenge, while promising plenty of intense fights, dangerous pursuits, and explosive action.

The story begins with Lopez’s character giving birth while working as an FBI agent. She is desperate to meet her newborn daughter, but her situation quickly becomes complicated when she learns that the child could be placed with another family for her own protection. Because Lopez’s character has dangerous enemies who could use the baby to get to her, the authorities believe the safest option is to separate mother and daughter.

Although the decision is heartbreaking, she agrees to give up her child and disappear from her life, believing that her daughter will have a safer and more normal future without her. For years, she remains hidden and lives in isolation, leaving her old life and deadly skills behind.

That peaceful existence eventually comes to an end when her enemies discover her daughter’s identity and kidnap her. Faced with the threat she feared most, the former agent has no choice but to return to action. Emerging from retirement in the remote Alaskan wilderness, she sets out to find her daughter and eliminate anyone who stands between them.

The trailer showcases Lopez undergoing intense training, using weapons, confronting enemies, and racing through dangerous situations. It also features motorcycle chases, dramatic confrontations, and moments of sharp humor as her character prepares to unleash the skills she has spent years trying to leave behind.

The Mother gives Lopez another opportunity to return to the action genre after several years of focusing heavily on romantic comedies. Her recent projects include Shotgun Wedding, Marry Me, and Second Act, but she has previously demonstrated her ability to handle darker and more physically demanding roles in movies such as The Cell and Enough.

The film features a strong supporting cast, including Lucy Paez as Lopez’s daughter, Joseph Fiennes, Paul Raci, Omari Hardwick, and Gael García Bernal. The cast also includes Edie Falco, whose presence adds another recognizable name to the project.

The Mother is directed by Niki Caro, who previously worked on North Country, The Zookeeper’s Wife, and Disney’s live-action adaptation of Mulan. The screenplay was developed by Misha Green, Peter Craig, and Andrea Berloff. Green is known for Lovecraft Country and Underground, while Craig has writing credits on Top Gun: Maverick and The Batman. Berloff previously worked on Straight Outta Compton.

Lopez also serves as a producer alongside Green, Benny Medina, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Miri Yoon, Roy Lee, and Marc Evans, with Molly Allen serving as executive producer.

With its combination of emotional family drama and relentless action, The Mother presents Jennifer Lopez as a determined protector who is prepared to risk everything to bring her daughter home. The film premiered on Netflix on May 12, 2023, just ahead of Mother’s Day.

My list of must-try jean trends for 2026 is growing; it currently includes all the silhouettes one denim expert revealed to me as the must-watch of the year (save for baggy jeans, because I’ve been wearing those for years). The fact that Clooney wore flared jeans is noteworthy in and of itself. The human rights lawyer is known for her refined dressing approach, regularly opting for billowy trousers, trendy boho blouses, and comfy sweater dresses—all staples that read elegant and timeless. So, when I spotted her earlier this year in the laid-back blues while out to dinner with hubby George Clooney, I knew I had to write about it. Of course, the fact that she wore flare jeans, the style countless celebs have worn the last few weeks, is noteworthy, too, as it further cements the style’s ‘It’ status for 2026.

Clooney opted for a pair of medium-wash jeans with subtle fading (another Y2K reference, IMO). Her blues had an ultra-high waist—so high, in fact, that they appeared to hit at the ribcage. It’s the complete opposite of the controversial low-rise denim, so it’s a possible sign that the high-high waist is coming back, too. Not to mention, Clooney’s jeans had a slightly oversized fit from the thighs to the ankles, but it’s that flared hem that has all my attention; it’s taking me back to my middle school days when I’d wear my True Religion flares every single day. (No joke.)

Mother The Weekender Jeans

It’s undeniable that Clooney’s jeans have that nostalgic flair (ahem, flare, wink, wink), but it’s also undeniable that celebs are clamoring to the style because it’s incredibly flattering. The blues basically act like an optical illusion, making legs look super long, especially when paired with a style that has an extra-long hemline and sky-high platforms á la Lopez; the singer is 5-feet-5-inches, but don’t you agree with me that she looks way taller in these jeans? Yeah, that’s thanks to the flares. The flare hem and longer inseams help create the look of legs for days, but add in a high-waisted cut, platform heels, and a crop top, and you’ll fool people into thinking you’re inches taller.
