Mark Your Calendars: Jennifer Lopez's The Mother Finally Has a Date

Motherly love collides with deadly instincts in The Mother, an action thriller starring Jennifer Lopez that arrived on Netflix just in time for Mother’s Day. The film premiered on May 12, 2023, bringing together intense action, emotional family drama, and a story centered on a woman forced to confront the dangerous life she once left behind.

Lopez stars as an unnamed former assassin who has spent years living in isolation after abandoning her criminal past. During her time as a professional killer, she made powerful enemies who would stop at nothing to find her. Knowing that her enemies could use her child to track her down, she made the painful decision to give her daughter away and disappear from her life.

Although the decision was intended to keep her daughter safe, the plan eventually falls apart. Years later, her daughter becomes a target, forcing the former assassin to leave her secluded existence and return to the violent world she once escaped. With dangerous enemies closing in, she must rely on her extraordinary combat skills and experience to protect the person she has spent years trying to keep out of harm’s way.

Lucy Paez plays Lopez’s daughter, while Joseph Fiennes portrays one of the film’s primary villains. The cast also features Omari Hardwick, Paul Raci, and Gael García Bernal, adding further depth to the action-packed story.

The project was first announced in February 2021, with production beginning in Vancouver in October of the same year. Filming was temporarily suspended following a COVID-19 outbreak, but production resumed several months later in March 2022. The remaining filming took place on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, where principal photography was completed soon afterward.

The Mother was directed by Niki Caro, who previously directed the live-action adaptation of Mulan. The screenplay was written by Misha Green and Peter Craig. Green, known for her work on Sons of Anarchy and Lovecraft Country, made her feature-film writing debut with the project. Craig previously worked on The Batman alongside Matt Reeves and also received a story credit for Top Gun: Maverick.

Lopez also took on a producing role in addition to leading the cast. She produced the film alongside Misha Green, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, Roy Lee, Marc Evans, and Miri Yoon, while Molly Allen served as an executive producer.

At its core, The Mother combines the emotional story of a parent trying to protect her child with the high-stakes intensity of an assassin thriller. The film explores sacrifice, motherhood, survival, and the consequences of leaving a dangerous past behind. When her daughter is threatened, Lopez’s character has no choice but to return to the skills that once made her feared, turning the protective instincts of a mother into the deadly abilities of a trained assassin.

The human rights lawyer is known for her refined dressing approach, regularly opting for billowy trousers, trendy boho blouses, and comfy sweater dresses—all staples that read elegant and timeless. So, when I spotted her earlier this year in the laid-back blues while out to dinner with hubby George Clooney, I knew I had to write about it. Of course, the fact that she wore flare jeans, the style countless celebs have worn the last few weeks, is noteworthy, too, as it further cements the style’s ‘It’ status for 2026.
