Everything You Need to Know About The Mother: Release Date and Trailer

Jennifer Lopez takes on one of her most physically demanding roles in The Mother, a Netflix action thriller centered on a former assassin who is forced to confront her violent past when her estranged daughter becomes a target. The story combines intense action with an emotional mother-daughter relationship, exploring how far one woman is willing to go to protect the child she was forced to leave behind.

The Mother premiered exclusively on Netflix on May 12, 2023, just before Mother’s Day. Production began in October 2021 but was temporarily suspended in January. Filming resumed two months later on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria and was completed shortly afterward.

The first teaser arrived in September 2022, giving audiences a brief glimpse of Lopez’s transformation into a hardened action hero. The footage showed her performing pull-ups in the snow, aiming a rifle, and riding a motorcycle at high speed. The full trailer, released in April 2023, provided more details about the story and the complicated relationship between the assassin and her daughter.

Lopez plays a highly trained former assassin who has spent years hiding in the remote Alaskan wilderness. She abandoned her daughter when the girl was young because she believed staying away was the only way to protect her from dangerous enemies connected to her past. However, her worst fears eventually become reality when those enemies discover the daughter’s identity and target her.

With nowhere else to turn, the mother comes out of hiding and begins a dangerous mission to rescue her daughter. Along the way, she must rely on the skills she developed during her life as an assassin, including firearms, hand-to-hand combat, driving, and survival techniques. The action includes motorcycle pursuits, gunfights, high-speed escapes, and other dangerous encounters.

Jennifer Lopez leads the cast as the determined mother. She began her acting career with a small role in My Little Girl before gaining wider recognition through Selena in 1997. She later became known for movies such as Maid in Manhattan, Monster-in-Law, and Jersey Girl while continuing her successful music career. The Mother gives her an opportunity to return to the intense action roles she previously explored in films such as The Cell and Enough.

Joseph Fiennes plays a mysterious character whose relationship with Lopez’s former assassin remains unclear. His facial scars and apparent injury to one eye suggest a troubled history that may be connected to the protagonist. Lucy Paez portrays the daughter, bringing an emotional perspective to a character who has grown up without knowing the full truth about her biological mother.

The supporting cast includes Omari Hardwick, Gael García Bernal, Paul Raci, Jesse Garcia, and Yvonne Senat Jones.

The screenplay was developed by Misha Green, Andrea Berloff, and Peter Craig, whose credits include Lovecraft Country, Straight Outta Compton, Bad Boys for Life, The Batman, and Top Gun: Maverick. Niki Caro directed the film after previously working on McFarland, USA and Disney’s live-action Mulan.

Produced by Lopez and a team including Misha Green, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, Roy Lee, and Miri Yoon, The Mother combines emotional family drama with fast-paced action.
