Behind the Scenes: J.Lo's Stunning Dress in Shotgun Wedding Revealed

Jennifer Lopez stars as a bride caught in the middle of an explosive action adventure in Prime Video’s Shotgun Wedding. Known for romantic comedies such as Marry Me and Maid in Manhattan, Lopez takes on a very different kind of wedding story in which her character spends much of her big day fighting armed pirates while still wearing her wedding dress.

The film follows Darcy and her fiancé Tom, played by Josh Duhamel, as they gather with their families and friends for a destination wedding on a beautiful tropical island. Instead of enjoying a peaceful celebration, the couple begins questioning their decision to get married just as their guests arrive. Their relationship troubles become insignificant, however, when armed pirates attack the wedding and take the guests hostage.

Directed by Jason Moore, known for the Pitch Perfect movies, and written by Mark Hammer, Shotgun Wedding forces Darcy and Tom to put aside their disagreements and work together to rescue their loved ones. As they attempt to survive the dangerous situation, their wedding celebration turns into a chaotic combination of romance, comedy, gunfights, explosions, and physical stunts.

One of the movie’s most distinctive elements is Jennifer Lopez’s wedding dress. Costume designer Mitchell Travers, who previously worked with Lopez on Hustlers, explained that creating the gown required careful consideration because it would be subjected to intense action throughout the film.

The dress had to look elegant while also surviving fights, explosions, dirt, sand, and plenty of physical movement. Travers drew inspiration from vintage wedding dresses and studied how gowns change as they age. Older dresses can develop a natural patina and take on warmer, yellowish tones. However, instead of making Lopez’s gown look old, the design team created a warmer rose shade that Travers described as a “warm blush.”

The color was only one part of the challenge. The costume was designed to reflect Darcy’s transformation throughout the story. As she becomes more confident and capable while facing danger, the dress also changes along with her.

Seven different versions of the wedding dress were created for production. Some versions were designed to have sections removed during the action, including the train, sleeves, and skirt. The dresses were constructed from numerous layers of stretch netting, allowing Lopez to move freely while maintaining the appearance of a traditional wedding gown.

Travers described the costume as something resembling a superhero suit disguised as a wedding dress. The flexible construction allowed Lopez to bend, run, fight, and perform demanding movements without being restricted by the gown.

Alongside Lopez and Duhamel, the film features Jennifer Coolidge as Tom’s mother, Carol, whose old wedding dress becomes the inspiration for Darcy’s gown. The supporting cast also includes Sonia Braga, Selena Tan, Callie Hernandez, D’Arcy Carden, Cheech Marin, and Lenny Kravitz, who plays Darcy’s charming former fiancé, Sean.

Shotgun Wedding combines romance and comedy with an unusual dose of action, turning a beautiful destination wedding into an unforgettable battle for survival.

My list of must-try jean trends for 2026 is growing; it currently includes all the silhouettes one denim expert revealed to me as the must-watch of the year (save for baggy jeans, because I’ve been wearing those for years). That said, one style that didn’t land on said aforementioned list, but is clearly due for big, big things this year, is flare jeans. With a growing list of celebrity fans that includes Meghan Markle, Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, Cindy Crawford, Kendrick Lamar (you know that moment), and, of course, Amal Clooney, there’s no denying the retro denim style that was popular in the early aughts is back—and bigger than ever.

The fact that Clooney wore flared jeans is noteworthy in and of itself. The human rights lawyer is known for her refined dressing approach, regularly opting for billowy trousers, trendy boho blouses, and comfy sweater dresses—all staples that read elegant and timeless. So, when I spotted her earlier this year in the laid-back blues while out to dinner with hubby George Clooney, I knew I had to write about it. Of course, the fact that she wore flare jeans, the style countless celebs have worn the last few weeks, is noteworthy, too, as it further cements the style’s ‘It’ status for 2026.

Clooney opted for a pair of medium-wash jeans with subtle fading (another Y2K reference, IMO). Her blues had an ultra-high waist—so high, in fact, that they appeared to hit at the ribcage. It’s the complete opposite of the controversial low-rise denim, so it’s a possible sign that the high-high waist is coming back, too. Not to mention, Clooney’s jeans had a slightly oversized fit from the thighs to the ankles, but it’s that flared hem that has all my attention; it’s taking me back to my middle school days when I’d wear my True Religion flares every single day. (No joke.)

It’s undeniable that Clooney’s jeans have that nostalgic flair (ahem, flare, wink, wink), but it’s also undeniable that celebs are clamoring to the style because it’s incredibly flattering. The blues basically act like an optical illusion, making legs look super long, especially when paired with a style that has an extra-long hemline and sky-high platforms á la Lopez; the singer is 5-feet-5-inches, but don’t you agree with me that she looks way taller in these jeans? Yeah, that’s thanks to the flares. The flare hem and longer inseams help create the look of legs for days, but add in a high-waisted cut, platform heels, and a crop top, and you’ll fool people into thinking you’re inches taller.

Leg-elongating factor aside, there’s no denying that flares are fun and nostalgia-inducing—and that’s exactly what I need right now. So, shop some more fun, funky flares from Frame, NYDJ, and Mavi below.
