Jennifer Lopez to Star in Robert Zemeckis's Thrilling New Netflix Film

Jennifer Lopez teams up with Back to the Future (1985) director Robert Zemeckis for her next movie. And actor and a singer, Lopez remains as active as ever in Hollywood and beyond. Her most recent acting gig was as the lead in Unstoppable (2024), a sports docudrama for Prime Video, but she also has a strong working relationship with Netflix, having starred in both The Mother (2023) and Atlas (2024), both of which position her front and center as an action star.

Now, Deadline reports that Lopez is teaming up with Zemeckis her her next project, which will be an adaptation of The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine. The film, which is in development at Netflix, is currently in the writing stage, with Oscar nominee Andrea Berloff and Oscar nominee John Gatins penning the screenplay. It doesn't yet have an expected release date. Check out a synopsis for the film below:

The story follows a con artist (Lopez) who targets a wealthy couple — the Parrishes — as her next victims. She infiltrates the pair by befriending the wife and seducing the husband, with the master plan of becoming the next Mrs. Parrish, only to discover that the wife’s life is far more complicated than she could have imagined.

Lopez will produce the film Nuyorican Productions alongside Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina. Liza Chasin produces for 3dot Productions, with Molly Sims for Something Happy Production. On board as executive producers are Margaret Chernin of 3dot, along with Lynne Constantine and Valerie Constantine, Jack Rapke and Derek Hogue.

What The Last Mrs. Parrish Adaptation Means For Jennifer Lopez

Her Recent Movie Hits Explained

The Mother reviews may have been generally negative from critics, but that film was a major viewership hit on Netflix. It was, for a time, in the streamer's top 10 movies of all time list, though it has since fallen out. Lopez's second collaboration with the streamer, Atlas, was met with even more negative reviews, and it spent several weeks at the top of Netflix's weekly top 10 list. These Netflix collaborations are on top of Lopez's role in Shotgun Wedding (2022) for Prime Video, which was also a hit despite poor reviews.

Lopez, then, is a proven audience draw even if she hasn't had a critical success in some time. Zemeckis, on the other hand, is coming off of Here (2024), which was neither a critical success nor a box office hit. The response to his previous movie, Pinocchio (2022), was negative as well, but he does have an Oscar win under his belt, taking home the Best Director statue for Forrest Gump (1994), which also won for Best Picture. With The Last Mrs. Parrish, both Lopez and Zemeckis have an opportunity to break their poor critical trends.

Our Take On Lopez & Zemeckis' New Collaboration

Will Zemeckis Finally Deliver Another Hit?

Though critics haven't liked many of Lopez's recent projects, it's clear that audiences have. Even when the material isn't good, Lopez's presence is seemingly enough to make a movie worth watching, and this bodes well for The Last Mrs. Parrish. The film was on fairly sure footing without being based on popular source material, but the fact the novel was such a hit means it will also appeal to the readers who enjoyed it.

Zemeckis' recent track record isn't promising, but Forrest Gump, and other movies like Back to the Future, Flight (2012), and Cast Away (2000) suggest he certainly has the capacity to make great films. It remains to be seen how the The Last Mrs. Parrish will fare with audiences and critics, but the Lopez project seems sure to be a buzzy one.

My list of must-try jean trends for 2026 is growing; it currently includes all the silhouettes one denim expert revealed to me as the must-watch of the year (save for baggy jeans, because I’ve been wearing those for years). That said, one style that didn’t land on said aforementioned list, but is clearly due for big, big things this year, is flare jeans. With a growing list of celebrity fans that includes Meghan Markle, Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, Cindy Crawford, Kendrick Lamar (you know that moment), and, of course, Amal Clooney, there’s no denying the retro denim style that was popular in the early aughts is back—and bigger than ever.

The fact that Clooney wore flared jeans is noteworthy in and of itself. The human rights lawyer is known for her refined dressing approach, regularly opting for billowy trousers, trendy boho blouses, and comfy sweater dresses—all staples that read elegant and timeless. So, when I spotted her earlier this year in the laid-back blues while out to dinner with hubby George Clooney, I knew I had to write about it. Of course, the fact that she wore flare jeans, the style countless celebs have worn the last few weeks, is noteworthy, too, as it further cements the style’s ‘It’ status for 2026.

Clooney opted for a pair of medium-wash jeans with subtle fading (another Y2K reference, IMO). Her blues had an ultra-high waist—so high, in fact, that they appeared to hit at the ribcage. It’s the complete opposite of the controversial low-rise denim, so it’s a possible sign that the high-high waist is coming back, too. Not to mention, Clooney’s jeans had a slightly oversized fit from the thighs to the ankles, but it’s that flared hem that has all my attention; it’s taking me back to my middle school days when I’d wear my True Religion flares every single day. (No joke.)

It’s undeniable that Clooney’s jeans have that nostalgic flair (ahem, flare, wink, wink), but it’s also undeniable that celebs are clamoring to the style because it’s incredibly flattering. The blues basically act like an optical illusion, making legs look super long, especially when paired with a style that has an extra-long hemline and sky-high platforms á la Lopez; the singer is 5-feet-5-inches, but don’t you agree with me that she looks way taller in these jeans? Yeah, that’s thanks to the flares. The flare hem and longer inseams help create the look of legs for days, but add in a high-waisted cut, platform heels, and a crop top, and you’ll fool people into thinking you’re inches taller.

Leg-elongating factor aside, there’s no denying that flares are fun and nostalgia-inducing—and that’s exactly what I need right now. So, shop some more fun, funky flares from Frame, NYDJ, and Mavi below.
