Jennifer Lopez's 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' Nets Awards Season Release!

Kiss of the Spider Woman has crawled it's way on to the 2025 release calendar. Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna star in the big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, which will be released in time for awards season. Deadline reports that the Bill Condon-directed film will hit theaters on October 10. The film premiered to critical acclaim at Sundance earlier this year, and was acquired for North American distribution by Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate, and LD Entertainment.

The October 10 date will see it open against a trio of big-name films: Tron: Ares, the latest entry in Disney's cyberpunk franchise; Animal Friends, a Ryan Reynolds-starring live-action/animation hybrid from Warner Bros.; and After the Hunt, a new thriller from Luca Guadagnino that stars Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, and Andrew Garfield. It will have to deal with leftovers from the previous week, as well, including Osgood Perkins' latest horror film Keeper, the Dwayne Johnson-starring MMA biopic The Smashing Machine, and the Channing Tatum crime drama Roofman. Plus, the following week brings the horror sequel The Black Phone 2 and Aziz Ansari's directorial debut Good Fortune.

What Is 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' About?

Luis (Tonatiuh) mending Valentin's (Diego Luna) wounds in Kiss of the Spider Woman

Set in an Argentinian prison in 1981, Kiss of the Spider Woman centers around two cellmates. Valentin Arregui Paz (Luna) is a Marxist at odds with the fascist Argentinian government, while Luis Molina (Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, Vida) is a gay window dresser in jail for allegedly corrupting a minor. Molina is a major cinephile, and retreats into a celluloid fantasy world to escape the horrors of prison. He shares his film fantasies with Valentin, many of which center around the diva Ingrid Luna (Lopez). However, Molina also harbors a dark secret that threatens to shatter the growing bond between the two men. The film also stars Tony Dovolani (Shall We Dance?), Bruno Bichir (Sicario: Day of the Soldado), and Tony-nominated actor Josefina Scaglione.

Kiss of the Spider Woman originates in a 1976 novel of the same name by Manuel Puig; it was adapted into a stage musical in 1992 by John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Terrence McNally. The book was also made into a film in 1985, which was directed by Héctor Eduardo Babenco and starred William Hurt, Raul Julia, and Sônia Braga. It was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. It won one award, a Best Actor Oscar for Hurt.

Kiss of the Spider Woman will be released in theaters on May 10, 2025. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.

My list of must-try jean trends for 2026 is growing; it currently includes all the silhouettes one denim expert revealed to me as the must-watch of the year (save for baggy jeans, because I’ve been wearing those for years). That said, one style that didn’t land on said aforementioned list, but is clearly due for big, big things this year, is flare jeans. With a growing list of celebrity fans that includes Meghan Markle, Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, Cindy Crawford, Kendrick Lamar (you know that moment), and, of course, Amal Clooney, there’s no denying the retro denim style that was popular in the early aughts is back—and bigger than ever.

The fact that Clooney wore flared jeans is noteworthy in and of itself. The human rights lawyer is known for her refined dressing approach, regularly opting for billowy trousers, trendy boho blouses, and comfy sweater dresses—all staples that read elegant and timeless. So, when I spotted her earlier this year in the laid-back blues while out to dinner with hubby George Clooney, I knew I had to write about it. Of course, the fact that she wore flare jeans, the style countless celebs have worn the last few weeks, is noteworthy, too, as it further cements the style’s ‘It’ status for 2026.

Clooney opted for a pair of medium-wash jeans with subtle fading (another Y2K reference, IMO). Her blues had an ultra-high waist—so high, in fact, that they appeared to hit at the ribcage. It’s the complete opposite of the controversial low-rise denim, so it’s a possible sign that the high-high waist is coming back, too. Not to mention, Clooney’s jeans had a slightly oversized fit from the thighs to the ankles, but it’s that flared hem that has all my attention; it’s taking me back to my middle school days when I’d wear my True Religion flares every single day. (No joke.)

It’s undeniable that Clooney’s jeans have that nostalgic flair (ahem, flare, wink, wink), but it’s also undeniable that celebs are clamoring to the style because it’s incredibly flattering. The blues basically act like an optical illusion, making legs look super long, especially when paired with a style that has an extra-long hemline and sky-high platforms á la Lopez; the singer is 5-feet-5-inches, but don’t you agree with me that she looks way taller in these jeans? Yeah, that’s thanks to the flares. The flare hem and longer inseams help create the look of legs for days, but add in a high-waisted cut, platform heels, and a crop top, and you’ll fool people into thinking you’re inches taller.

Leg-elongating factor aside, there’s no denying that flares are fun and nostalgia-inducing—and that’s exactly what I need right now. So, shop some more fun, funky flares from Frame, NYDJ, and Mavi below.
