Step Into the Spider's Web: J.Lo's New Musical Will Mesmerize You

The Kiss of the Spider Woman is not an unfamiliar title but, according to director Bill Condon, the 2025 adaptation, is "something different from anything you’ve seen." Now, Vanity Fair is unveiling a first look at the upcoming movie-musical adaptation. The images give us our first full look at Jennifer Lopez as Ingrid Luna. The movie is based on a stage adaptation of the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig. If the title sounds familiar and doesn't ring any bells with that, Héctor Babenco, a Brazilian director, adapted the work in 1985. William Hurt, Raul Julia, and Sônia Braga starred. Hurt won Best Actor Oscar in 1986 for his role as Luis Molina. The movie premieres at the Sundance Film Festival this Sunday.

The premise is that Molina, played by Tonatiuh in the 2025 film, is imprisoned in Argentina in the 80s. To escape the reality of his imprisonment, he imagines films starring Ingrid Luna, played by Lopez. Diego Luna also stars. In the images we also get a look at Luna and Tonatiuh as well. With Condon directing the film, after penning the classic Chicago, he explained to Vanity Fair that, This feels like a unicorn movie to me. It’s very hard to actually distill and describe.” As for Lopez's performance, the words seem to come easy for both him and Tonatiuh. Of her performance, Tonituah explains, "They were like [to Lopez], ‘This is your mark and then that’s your mark and that’s your mark,’ and she goes, ‘Yeah, okay,'" and to Tonituah's surprise "she nails it perfectly. I think she finished that entire rehearsal in an hour and a half. I’m like, ‘I’ve been here for a month and a half—and you just killed that?'"

Condon Put "A Lot" Of Himself Into the Characters of 'Kiss of the Spider Woman'

Condon's directing career includes Gods and Monsters, Dreamgirls, and the last two Twilight movies. Condon explains that, "I did put an awful lot of myself into both characters." He says, "In the case of Molina, his love of old Hollywood forms, I started to think of it at one point as my explanation for an eclectic career where I have been drawn to different genres—some of which are not the most respectable." With the movie-musical depicting both Luis's time in prison and what he fantasizes (which features Lopez), the movie was basically shot as two mini movies. The prison scenes were shot in Uruguay whereas the other scenes were shot on soundstages in New Jersey. "I wrote it as two movies," Condon explains, "and we made it as two movies,” Condon says. "That left us the means to make a lavish Hollywood movie musical—because it was only 35 minutes."

My list of must-try jean trends for 2026 is growing; it currently includes all the silhouettes one denim expert revealed to me as the must-watch of the year (save for baggy jeans, because I’ve been wearing those for years). That said, one style that didn’t land on said aforementioned list, but is clearly due for big, big things this year, is flare jeans. With a growing list of celebrity fans that includes Meghan Markle, Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, Cindy Crawford, Kendrick Lamar (you know that moment), and, of course, Amal Clooney, there’s no denying the retro denim style that was popular in the early aughts is back—and bigger than ever.

The fact that Clooney wore flared jeans is noteworthy in and of itself. The human rights lawyer is known for her refined dressing approach, regularly opting for billowy trousers, trendy boho blouses, and comfy sweater dresses—all staples that read elegant and timeless. So, when I spotted her earlier this year in the laid-back blues while out to dinner with hubby George Clooney, I knew I had to write about it. Of course, the fact that she wore flare jeans, the style countless celebs have worn the last few weeks, is noteworthy, too, as it further cements the style’s ‘It’ status for 2026.

Clooney opted for a pair of medium-wash jeans with subtle fading (another Y2K reference, IMO). Her blues had an ultra-high waist—so high, in fact, that they appeared to hit at the ribcage. It’s the complete opposite of the controversial low-rise denim, so it’s a possible sign that the high-high waist is coming back, too. Not to mention, Clooney’s jeans had a slightly oversized fit from the thighs to the ankles, but it’s that flared hem that has all my attention; it’s taking me back to my middle school days when I’d wear my True Religion flares every single day. (No joke.)

It’s undeniable that Clooney’s jeans have that nostalgic flair (ahem, flare, wink, wink), but it’s also undeniable that celebs are clamoring to the style because it’s incredibly flattering. The blues basically act like an optical illusion, making legs look super long, especially when paired with a style that has an extra-long hemline and sky-high platforms á la Lopez; the singer is 5-feet-5-inches, but don’t you agree with me that she looks way taller in these jeans? Yeah, that’s thanks to the flares. The flare hem and longer inseams help create the look of legs for days, but add in a high-waisted cut, platform heels, and a crop top, and you’ll fool people into thinking you’re inches taller.

Leg-elongating factor aside, there’s no denying that flares are fun and nostalgia-inducing—and that’s exactly what I need right now. So, shop some more fun, funky flares from Frame, NYDJ, and Mavi below.
