Star Wars star Diego Luna followed up his acclaimed turn as Cassian Andor in the prequel series, Andor, with another impressive performance in Kiss of the Spider Woman. The political prison drama, presented in a musical format, has been one of the most celebrated releases of recent months. It made its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 26 before opening in theaters later in October. Unfortunately, the critical acclaim it earned at Sundance didn’t quite translate to box office success, likely due, in part, to the long gap between premieres. Now, however, the film is poised to reach a wider audience as it prepares for its home release.
Kiss of the Spider Woman is written and directed by Bill Condon, the Academy Award–winning filmmaker and musical veteran behind Chicago, Dreamgirls, The Greatest Showman, and Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast remake. The film serves as a remake of the 1985 classic of the same name, which itself was adapted from Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel. Co-written by Condon, Terrence McNally, and Puig, the official synopsis for the film reads:
"From Bill Condon comes this emotional, visually stunning new adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman. Valentín (Diego Luna), a political prisoner, shares a cell with Molina (Tonatiuh Elizarraraz), a window dresser convicted under the government’s repressive moral codes. The two form an unlikely bond as Molina recounts the plot of a dazzling Technicolor-hued Hollywood musical, starring his favorite silver screen diva, Ingrid Luna (Jennifer Lopez)."
Is 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' Worth Watching?
Kiss of the Spider Woman is another entertaining addition to Condon’s impressive musical portfolio. The film currently holds a Certified Fresh rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics' consensus reading: "Weaving a visually sumptuous web of musical intrigue, Kiss of the Spider Woman showcases beauty in tragedy through wondrous performances by Jennifer Lopez, Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, and Diego Luna." Audiences have also responded positively, giving the film a solid 67% score and praising its striking visuals and strong ensemble performances.
Collider’s Ross Bonaime, in his review, singled out Jennifer Lopez’s performance for special praise, writing, "Lopez is an absolute powerhouse, and she’s never had a role like this. Not only can she sing and dance in a way that completely blows us away, despite decades of knowing what she’s capable of, but through her, we understand why a film like this could mean so much to Luis." The strength of the ensemble’s performances has reportedly prompted Lionsgate to prepare an Oscar campaign for the film’s stars ahead of the upcoming awards season, and Star Wars fans are hopeful that Luna will finally receive the awards recognition he deserves, especially after his surprising Emmy snub for Andor.
Kiss of the Spider Woman became available to own On Demand and Digital on November 11, 2025.

My list of must-try jean trends for 2026 is growing; it currently includes all the silhouettes one denim expert revealed to me as the must-watch of the year (save for baggy jeans, because I’ve been wearing those for years). That said, one style that didn’t land on said aforementioned list, but is clearly due for big, big things this year, is flare jeans. With a growing list of celebrity fans that includes Meghan Markle, Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, Cindy Crawford, Kendrick Lamar (you know that moment), and, of course, Amal Clooney, there’s no denying the retro denim style that was popular in the early aughts is back—and bigger than ever.
The fact that Clooney wore flared jeans is noteworthy in and of itself. The human rights lawyer is known for her refined dressing approach, regularly opting for billowy trousers, trendy boho blouses, and comfy sweater dresses—all staples that read elegant and timeless. So, when I spotted her earlier this year in the laid-back blues while out to dinner with hubby George Clooney, I knew I had to write about it. Of course, the fact that she wore flare jeans, the style countless celebs have worn the last few weeks, is noteworthy, too, as it further cements the style’s ‘It’ status for 2026.

Clooney opted for a pair of medium-wash jeans with subtle fading (another Y2K reference, IMO). Her blues had an ultra-high waist—so high, in fact, that they appeared to hit at the ribcage. It’s the complete opposite of the controversial low-rise denim, so it’s a possible sign that the high-high waist is coming back, too. Not to mention, Clooney’s jeans had a slightly oversized fit from the thighs to the ankles, but it’s that flared hem that has all my attention; it’s taking me back to my middle school days when I’d wear my True Religion flares every single day. (No joke.)

It’s undeniable that Clooney’s jeans have that nostalgic flair (ahem, flare, wink, wink), but it’s also undeniable that celebs are clamoring to the style because it’s incredibly flattering. The blues basically act like an optical illusion, making legs look super long, especially when paired with a style that has an extra-long hemline and sky-high platforms á la Lopez; the singer is 5-feet-5-inches, but don’t you agree with me that she looks way taller in these jeans? Yeah, that’s thanks to the flares. The flare hem and longer inseams help create the look of legs for days, but add in a high-waisted cut, platform heels, and a crop top, and you’ll fool people into thinking you’re inches taller.
Leg-elongating factor aside, there’s no denying that flares are fun and nostalgia-inducing—and that’s exactly what I need right now. So, shop some more fun, funky flares from Frame, NYDJ, and Mavi below.
