Jennifer Lopez is one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world, with a career that has successfully crossed music, television, and film. Before becoming an international pop superstar, Lopez had already established herself as an actress, eventually building an impressive collection of roles across romantic comedies, thrillers, crime films, and action movies. From The Wedding Planner to The Mother, her filmography demonstrates a willingness to explore very different characters while maintaining the charisma that has made her a major Hollywood star.
Monster-in-Law, released in 2005, cast Lopez as Charlotte, a young woman who believes she has found the perfect man, played by Michael Vartan. Unfortunately, his mother, portrayed by Jane Fonda, is determined to destroy their relationship. The movie follows their escalating battle in a lighthearted romantic comedy that relies heavily on the chemistry and comedic performances of its leads.
The Wedding Planner from 2001 remains one of Lopez’s most recognizable romantic comedies. She plays Mary Fiore, a successful wedding planner who unexpectedly falls for a doctor, played by Matthew McConaughey. The situation becomes complicated when Mary discovers that the man she loves is already engaged. Although predictable, the film became a major commercial success and helped establish Lopez as a leading rom-com star.
In Second Act, Lopez plays Maya Vargas, a hardworking assistant manager at a grocery store who gets an unexpected opportunity to reinvent herself. The 2018 comedy follows Maya as she attempts to prove that experience and ambition can be just as valuable as formal qualifications. While the story follows familiar conventions, Lopez’s charm remains one of its biggest strengths.
Lopez also demonstrated her ability to handle more unusual material with Anaconda. In the 1997 adventure thriller, she plays Terri Flores, a filmmaker traveling through the Amazon with a documentary crew. The group encounters a dangerous hunter and an enormous snake, turning their expedition into a fight for survival. The film became a memorable camp classic.
Maid in Manhattan sees Lopez playing Marisa, a single mother working as a hotel maid who becomes romantically involved with a wealthy political candidate, played by Ralph Fiennes. Despite its predictable storyline, the movie remains a popular example of Lopez’s early romantic-comedy work.
In Parker, Lopez takes on a more action-oriented role as Leslie, a struggling real-estate agent who becomes involved with a professional thief played by Jason Statham. Their unlikely partnership provides much of the movie’s entertainment, while the film mixes crime, action, and comedy.
Enough gave Lopez a considerably darker role. She plays Slim, a woman who discovers that her husband is abusive and controlling. Determined to escape and protect herself, she eventually transforms from a frightened victim into someone prepared to fight back. The intense subject matter makes the movie different from many of Lopez’s lighter projects.
The Mother, released in 2023, further expanded Lopez’s action credentials. She plays a highly trained former operative who comes out of hiding to protect the daughter she gave up years earlier. The Netflix thriller combines emotional family drama with intense action sequences, with Lopez serving as the film’s central force.
Shotgun Wedding combines Lopez’s familiar romantic-comedy style with action. She plays Darcy, a bride whose destination wedding becomes a nightmare when armed criminals take the guests hostage. Alongside Josh Duhamel, she must rescue their loved ones while dealing with the chaos surrounding their wedding.
Marry Me offers another modern romantic-comedy role. Lopez plays Kat Valdez, a famous singer whose planned public wedding collapses after she discovers her fiancé has been unfaithful. In an impulsive decision, she chooses a stranger from the audience, played by Owen Wilson, and agrees to marry him instead. The unusual pairing creates a charming and entertaining story about unexpected love.

My list of must-try jean trends for 2026 is growing; it currently includes all the silhouettes one denim expert revealed to me as the must-watch of the year (save for baggy jeans, because I’ve been wearing those for years). That said, one style that didn’t land on said aforementioned list, but is clearly due for big, big things this year, is flare jeans. With a growing list of celebrity fans that includes Meghan Markle, Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, Cindy Crawford, Kendrick Lamar (you know that moment), and, of course, Amal Clooney, there’s no denying the retro denim style that was popular in the early aughts is back—and bigger than ever.
The fact that Clooney wore flared jeans is noteworthy in and of itself. The human rights lawyer is known for her refined dressing approach, regularly opting for billowy trousers, trendy boho blouses, and comfy sweater dresses—all staples that read elegant and timeless. So, when I spotted her earlier this year in the laid-back blues while out to dinner with hubby George Clooney, I knew I had to write about it. Of course, the fact that she wore flare jeans, the style countless celebs have worn the last few weeks, is noteworthy, too, as it further cements the style’s ‘It’ status for 2026.

Clooney opted for a pair of medium-wash jeans with subtle fading (another Y2K reference, IMO). Her blues had an ultra-high waist—so high, in fact, that they appeared to hit at the ribcage. It’s the complete opposite of the controversial low-rise denim, so it’s a possible sign that the high-high waist is coming back, too. Not to mention, Clooney’s jeans had a slightly oversized fit from the thighs to the ankles, but it’s that flared hem that has all my attention; it’s taking me back to my middle school days when I’d wear my True Religion flares every single day. (No joke.)

It’s undeniable that Clooney’s jeans have that nostalgic flair (ahem, flare, wink, wink), but it’s also undeniable that celebs are clamoring to the style because it’s incredibly flattering. The blues basically act like an optical illusion, making legs look super long, especially when paired with a style that has an extra-long hemline and sky-high platforms á la Lopez; the singer is 5-feet-5-inches, but don’t you agree with me that she looks way taller in these jeans? Yeah, that’s thanks to the flares. The flare hem and longer inseams help create the look of legs for days, but add in a high-waisted cut, platform heels, and a crop top, and you’ll fool people into thinking you’re inches taller.
Leg-elongating factor aside, there’s no denying that flares are fun and nostalgia-inducing—and that’s exactly what I need right now. So, shop some more fun, funky flares from Frame, NYDJ, and Mavi below.
