The Mother proved to be a highly successful action thriller, and now Jennifer Lopez needs to do The Mother 2. Lopez effectively portrays an unnamed mercenary and assassin known as "the Mother" who appears after more than a decade of hiding to rescue her daughter Zoe (Lucy Paez) from the clutches of former associates (including Joseph Fiennes) who want to draw her out. Even after she rescues the girl, the excitement is just beginning when she takes the preteen deep into the Alaskan wilderness to prepare her for the onslaught ahead.
Lopez balances visceral action with emotional sincerity as the titular character, and though The Mother's cast of characters is small, it keeps the focus where it needs to be. Though the taut thriller seems to wrap up at the end, there are a few storylines that could be expanded upon in a sequel that deepens the bond of mother and daughter. With stunts, suspense, and strong characters creating the foundation for a solid female-led action franchise, Lopez shouldn't waste the opportunity to make The Mother 2
Movie Scored Biggest 2023 Netflix Opening
The Mother broke a Netflix streaming record on its opening weekend when it was released to coincide with Mother's Day. Curious action fans, as well as fans of Lopez herself, wanted to see how she handled all the stunts and gritty chase sequences, and The Mother delivered a strong celebration of a mother's perseverance in the face of insurmountable odds. The Mother 2 could be a chance for Netflix and Lopez to duplicate the success of The Mother ranking 82 across the world and accumulating 83.71 million viewing hours from May 8 to 14 as well as 43 million total views, according to Variety.
Jennifer Lopez Can Continue Her Streaming Success
Lopez has been doing well on various streaming platforms ever since she generated Oscar buzz for Hustlers in 2019. The romantic comedy Marry Me from Peacock became one of the network's most-streamed titles, and another rom-com Shotgun Wedding had a strong release on Prime Video at the time it debuted in January 2023. After the reception The Mother received later the same year, a sequel would continue Lopez's successful career as a streaming star.
The Mother 2 Could Start A Female Led Action Franchise
Like Charlize Theron in Old Guard, there's been no shortage of Lopez's peers appearing in female-driven action movies, but they haven't all spawned sequels. If The Mother 2 got made, it could kickstart a female-led action franchise the likes of which haven't been seen since The Hunger Games and Resident Evil movies. Tonally, it would have more in common with The Terminator or Alien films starring two iconic action heroines, Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley.RELATED: 10 Movies To Watch If You Loved The Mother
Jennifer Lopez Comedies Haven’t Done So Well
While Lope'z rom-com Marry Me did well, Shotgun Wedding didn't fair as well, and both films felt like generic films from around the time she made Two Weeks Notice or something similar. Given that her comedies haven't done as well as her dramas like Hustlers, it makes sense that she'd want to capitalize on what's become popular in her wheelhouse. The Mother 2 would ensure that Lopez was making the most of how well her action films have been doing.
Zoe Could Want More Training In The Mother 2
One of the best parts of The Mother takes place in the remote Alaskan wilderness, where Lopez's character trains Zoe how to fight, hunt, and protect herself. It's possible that in The Mother 2, Zoe could grow into her teenage years wanting to become an assassin or mercenary like her mother. Lopez has mentioned that if a sequel was ever made, it would probably be called "The Daughter" and focus on Zoe's life after discovering her mom's true identity.
The Mother Received Positive Reviews From Critics
Despite having more than a few action movie tropes, The Mother received fairly positive reviews from critics. Lopez's performance in particular was noted as being effective, in a visceral role that she doesn't always get to play because of her at times glamorous persona. Lopez should do The Mother 2 should that she can expand on the emotional range she showed in her scenes with Zoe, as well as highlight her physical dexterity.
The Mother 2 Could Get Jennifer Lopez Back To Her Action Roots
Lopez has a track record for solid action movies under her belt, and doing The Mother 2 could continue its winning streak. After starring as an action hero in movies like Enough, Anaconda, and Money Train, she's proven that she has what it takes to keep doing these sorts of films. The Mother might not have been particularly innovative with its storyline, but it did deliver pulse-pounding action and high-octane stunts when it needed to.
The Mother 2 Could Have Even Bigger Stunts
Lopez did as many stunts as she could for The Mother, and underwent extensive weapons training to be able to handle several firearms with ease. The movie also featured some exhilarating action sequences, including an impressive snowmobile chase and an exciting hand-to-hand fight at the finale, which could be improved upon in a sequel. Instead of the remote snow-covered wilderness, The Mother 2 could differentiate from The Mother's filming locations by picking another inhospitable locale, perhaps in a warmer climate, and feature even more stunt work.
Jennifer Lopez’s Character Could Need Saving In The Mother 2
Even though everything seems to work out in The Mother's ending, there are still a few ways that the story could continue. There could be other associates from the mother's former life that could come looking to draw her out. She could be the one who needs saving and it might be up to a newly trained Zoe to find her. Or something could happen to Zoe's adoptive family, necessitating the mother jumping back into action once again.
The Mother 2 Could Turn Into A Lucrative Partnership With Netflix & Lopez
Other big celebrities have recently partnered with Netflix, making The Mother's success an amazing opportunity for Lopez. Ryan Reynolds did incredibly well with Six Underground and Red Notice, and Lopez's husband Ben Affleck also did well with Triple Frontier, so a franchise based around The Mother could be the start of a lucrative partnership for the streaming giant and Lopez. Red Notice 2 was announced in January 2022, so fans of The Mother can expect to hear about The Mother 2 soon.
Amal Clooney Wore Optical Illusion Jeans Cosigned by Jennifer Lopez—Fall-Ready Styles Start at $44

My list of must-try jean trends for 2026 is growing; it currently includes all the silhouettes one denim expert revealed to me as the must-watch of the year (save for baggy jeans, because I’ve been wearing those for years). That said, one style that didn’t land on said aforementioned list, but is clearly due for big, big things this year, is flare jeans. With a growing list of celebrity fans that includes Meghan Markle, Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, Cindy Crawford, Kendrick Lamar (you know that moment), and, of course, Amal Clooney, there’s no denying the retro denim style that was popular in the early aughts is back—and bigger than ever.
The fact that Clooney wore flared jeans is noteworthy in and of itself. The human rights lawyer is known for her refined dressing approach, regularly opting for billowy trousers, trendy boho blouses, and comfy sweater dresses—all staples that read elegant and timeless. So, when I spotted her earlier this year in the laid-back blues while out to dinner with hubby George Clooney, I knew I had to write about it. Of course, the fact that she wore flare jeans, the style countless celebs have worn the last few weeks, is noteworthy, too, as it further cements the style’s ‘It’ status for 2026.

Clooney opted for a pair of medium-wash jeans with subtle fading (another Y2K reference, IMO). Her blues had an ultra-high waist—so high, in fact, that they appeared to hit at the ribcage. It’s the complete opposite of the controversial low-rise denim, so it’s a possible sign that the high-high waist is coming back, too. Not to mention, Clooney’s jeans had a slightly oversized fit from the thighs to the ankles, but it’s that flared hem that has all my attention; it’s taking me back to my middle school days when I’d wear my True Religion flares every single day. (No joke.)
Gap High-Rise ‘70s Flare Jeans

It’s undeniable that Clooney’s jeans have that nostalgic flair (ahem, flare, wink, wink), but it’s also undeniable that celebs are clamoring to the style because it’s incredibly flattering. The blues basically act like an optical illusion, making legs look super long, especially when paired with a style that has an extra-long hemline and sky-high platforms á la Lopez; the singer is 5-feet-5-inches, but don’t you agree with me that she looks way taller in these jeans? Yeah, that’s thanks to the flares. The flare hem and longer inseams help create the look of legs for days, but add in a high-waisted cut, platform heels, and a crop top, and you’ll fool people into thinking you’re inches taller.
Leg-elongating factor aside, there’s no denying that flares are fun and nostalgia-inducing—and that’s exactly what I need right now. So, shop some more fun, funky flares from Frame, NYDJ, and Mavi below.
