“I didn’t know they were going to make Beauty and the Beast at the time I turned down Cinderella,” Watson shared. “But when they offered me Belle, I just felt the character resonated with me so much more than Cinderella did.”
For Watson, who has become a global voice for gender equality through her work as a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador and the HeForShe campaign, playing a role model for young girls is a responsibility she takes seriously.
She describes Belle as a woman who remains “curious, compassionate and open-minded,” adding, “That’s the kind of woman I would want to embody as a role model, given the choice.”
Fans of the original animated classic know Belle as a bookworm, but Watson is taking that “outsider” quality even further. She revealed that she worked closely with director Bill Condon to give Belle a brand-new backstory: she’s an inventor.
While her father, Maurice, is a music box maker in this version, Belle is the one getting her hands dirty. It’s a small change that packs a big punch for Watson’s vision of a modern heroine.
“There’s this kind of outsider quality that Belle had, and the fact she had this really empowering defiance of what was expected of her,” Watson explained. “In a strange way, she challenges the status quo of the place she lives in, and I found that really inspiring.”
