Tom Hanks is the type of actor who can easily jump from one genre to another (comedy, drama, sci-fi, romance) and no one questions it. He’s played some of the most iconic characters from the last few decades, and he’s doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. This year alone, Hanks generated Oscar buzz with his performance in director Clint Eastwood’s Sully – and the actor’s slate of upcoming projects is just as impressive.
Hanks will next star in the adaptation of Dave Eggers’ best-selling novel, The Circle. Hanks, as it were, appeared in another Eggers adaptation this year, in the form of A Hologram for the King. Looking back the actor’s long line of characters who exude intelligence and esteem, it seems only natural that Hanks would be drawn to Eggers’ storytelling style. The only difference with The Circle, however, is that Hanks will be taking a role that mirrors the likes of Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. That creative choice will surely be a talking point for the film, and now fans and newcomers alike can get a closer look.
EuropaCorp has now released an official trailer for The Circle online. While Hanks pops up every now and again, the bulk of the footage focuses on the film’s protagonist, played by Emma Watson. The Harry Potter alum stars alongside up and comers John Boyega (Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens) and Ellar Coltrane (Boyhood), as well as Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Patton Oswalt (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), among other name actors. The Circle
centers around new grad Mae Holland (Watson) who’s hired at a Silicon Valley tech company called The Circle. She gets involved with the company’s head, Eamon Bailey (Hanks), and soon discovers the many highly-advanced capabilities of The Circle – in particular, the SeeChange cameras. These are glass eyeballs that can be placed anywhere, and transmit real-time footage wirelessly. This, of course, feels very similar to something like the iPhone, which can fit in your pocket and film anything without much notice from bystanders. Indeed, the story is eerily relevant to the modern state of technology, and especially how everyone and everything is being watched.
This film really has the potential to become a real eye-opener. As illustrated by Bailey’s sermons of how knowledge is power and that we are better off for having it in the trailer, there are so many areas of modern society that The Circle‘s social commentary can be applied to. What remains to be seen is how well The Circle examines those ideas. Similar films like The Fifth Estate, Blackhat and Snowden all just grazed over the biggest — and most sensitive — topics of technology. Hopefully that will all change with The Circle. There’s a lot of talent in front of and behind the camera here, which could help give the film the boost it needs.

Unexpected Team-Up: Prince William and Emma Watson Unite for Change
Prince William had plenty to celebrate this weekend, but his latest public appearance quickly turned heads for a very different reason. After marking his 44th birthday and Father's Day with his family, the future king returned to royal duties—and made a surprisingly personal confession about the emotional toll of climate change.
William joined Hollywood stars Emma Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch at a United for Wildlife forum in London, an initiative he launched with the Royal Foundation in 2013. The organization works around the world to combat wildlife trafficking, environmental crime, and the destruction of endangered species.
But it was William's candid admission about his own fears that stole the spotlight.
The Prince of Wales revealed that climate change has caused him "sleepless nights," admitting he has struggled with anxiety about what the future could look like. Yet instead of allowing those fears to overwhelm him, William said seeing real progress through conservation efforts has helped keep his environmental anxiety under control.
He also delivered a powerful message to business leaders, urging them to become the kind of leaders they admired when they were children. With technology and innovation transforming the world at an incredible pace, William challenged CEOs to use their influence to create meaningful change.
The event launched London Climate Action Week, with more royal appearances expected, including the Earthshot Prize assembly.
Emma Watson also delivered a surprising revelation of her own. The Harry Potter star highlighted the fashion industry's enormous environmental impact, pointing out that it produces more emissions than aviation and ranks behind only oil among major polluting industries.
Watson, who is also pursuing a doctorate in philosophy at Oxford, shared a hilarious story about mistakenly believing paparazzi were following her. After spotting photographers with telephoto lenses, she arranged a distraction and escaped through another exit. The twist? They weren't photographing her at all. They were waiting to capture a red kite.
Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch praised William as "a great guy" and urged businesses and individuals to recognize that they can still make a difference, even when global environmental challenges appear overwhelming.
With William, Watson, and Cumberbatch joining forces on the issue, the London forum delivered a clear message: the fight against environmental destruction is becoming impossible for the world's biggest names to ignore.
