‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Becomes Second-Fastest To Cross $2B At Global Box Office

Brand New Day‘s big jump on Saturday of +54% is the type of increase you see on a big film in deep summer when kids go back to school: your Fridays are a tad lower, and Sundays decline a bit harder. Still, an excellent Saturday. Imax’s second weekend with Brand New Day grossed $4.2M.

It’s the 33rd weekend of the year, and Brand New Day‘s $70M is the most amount of money ever made by a pic on this frame in the No. 1 spot post Covid. Post pandemic, this is the biggest 33rd weekend of the year with $166M made by all movies.

Rentrak reports that summer stands at $4.2 billion stateside for the first Friday in May through today, which is 24% ahead of last summer at the same point in time, and just -3% behind the record summer of 2013 which finaled the season at $4.755B.

The current running B.O. this year is $6.86B, +19% ahead of Jan. 1-Aug. 16 period last year and -7% behind 2019 which at this point in time stood at $7.4B.

Black Bear

It’s interesting to note that there were 16 new releases this weekend ranging in theater count from 200 to a near 3,500. As exhibition calls for more product, they’re getting it. But will they hold these movies? Or will they cave to the next big shiny major studio wide entry with low box office prospects? Some of these specialty pics require extra care, and need to stay in theaters longer so audiences find them, i.e. Black Bear’s Matthew McConaughey comeback blues grass crime pic-multi genre movie The Rivals of Amziah King with 89% certified fresh Rotten Tomatoes critics score and 76% from audiences. The pic made $1M at 632 theater with bookings across the heartland and Q&As by cast members across the region.

For the most part, the new major studio dinosaur wide entries of Paw Patrol: Dino Movie and The End of Oak Street benefitted from a situation of all boats rise. Along with Brand New Day, the three movies split the family audience as kids went back to school (51% K-12 were off on Friday).

Paramount/Spin Master’s PG-rated Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie overperformed at $20.5M and Warner Bros/Bad Robot’s The End of Oak Street came right around where NRG predicted at $21M.

That’s the second best opening in the Paw Patrol franchise after 2023’s Paw Patrol: The Mighty which debuted to $22.7M. Dino Movie received a second solid A for Paw Patrol after The Mighty. The 2021 Paw Patrol movie received an A- (puppies can’t always be perfect). Dino Movie also had a good 63% definite recommend for Dino Movie in Rentrak/Screen Engine PostTrak exits. The Mighty did a 2.87x multiple off its opening ending its U.S./Canada run at $65.3M. Dino Movie over performed in the South, South Central and Midwest with great playability in the middle of the country.

Typically, some of these kid franchises run a five-to-seven lifecycle before fading, but the preschool puppy IP has been strong for 13 years (this being Paramount’s third feature film with Spin Master) with renewed engagement on TV and streaming, merchandise sales, and live events. Jennifer Dodge, Paramount’s President of Animation, is behind this. She worked previously at Paw Patrol studio Spin Master, building out its entertainment division, and overseeing the franchise’s evolution from creative to toy line to now.

Paw Patrol: Dino Movie is more family friendly than End of Oak Street (hello, it’s about a family and they’re chased by dinosaurs, just like in Jurassic World), pulling in 50% parents, 36% kids under 12 and 14% general audiences.

Per PostTrak, Oak Street‘s inhabitants were 10% kids under 12 with 17% family adult. Diversity demos on Dino Movie was 43% Caucasian, 29% Latino and Hispanic, 14% Black, 8% Native American and other, and 6% Asian American.

The End of Oak Street landed a B CinemaScore, which is just under the B+ of August Warner PG-13 hit The Meg which debuted to $45.4M. Oak Street was tracking heavy with women because of the Anne Hathaway factor, but women over 25 were the second biggest to attend at 28% after men over 25 at 45%, followed by men under 25 at 14% and women under 25 at 13%. A meh 51% definite recommend overall for Oak Street. Diversity demos were 48% Caucasian, 24% Latino and Hispanic, 13% Black, 10% Asian American and 5% Native American and other.

Paw Patrol Dino Movie has no PLFs, while Oak Street has a mix of Imax and PLFs accounting for close to 15% of the weekend. Of that Imax repped close to 7% of the Hathaway-McGregor pic’s frame.

For Dino Movie, the highest grossing theater is the Cinemark in North Canton, Ohio with just over $24K through Saturday. Oak Street‘s biggest house is the AMC in Burbank, CA with close to $80K.

Second, still powered by Imax, goes to Universal’s fifth weekend ofThe Odyssey with $23.2M, an amazing -27% hold, after a $6.5M Friday and $9.2M Saturday at 3,217 locations. Running cume by EOD today is over a half billion stateside or $504.6M. Imax drove $8.1M this past weekend for a running total for the large format exhibitor of $163.4M. For Imax, The Odyssey, is their highest grossing movie ever with $346.4M, and the only Imax movie to exceed $300M in worldwide ticket sales.

Busting into 5th place is the documentary Katseye: Wild Hearts about the Los Angeles based girl group from Trafalgar. The pic is looking at $4M for the weekend after $2.2M Friday and $1M Saturday at 724 sites. Solid numbers, but front-loaded. Trailer is below:

Focus Features’ release of West End capture musical, Six: The Musical Live at 1,462 theaters with a 3-day of $3M off a Friday of $840K is coming in at 6th place while Angel Studios’ Reagan vs. Gorbachev movie The Brink of War brought in $2.68M in 7th place after a $1.1M Friday, $901K Saturday and a solid A CinemaScore. Six had OK cash in Canada, Orlando, NYC and LA. Angel Studios has seen better, and so have previous indie Reagan movies which posted a $7.65M opening in the last weekend of August two years ago.

Brink of War pulled in 60% male/40% female with a strong 61% definite recommend. The over 55 crowd showed up the most at 48%, by far the biggest demo for the feature. Diversity demos were 70% Caucasian, 13% Latino and Hispanic, 6% Black, and 6% Asian American. Wayfarer Theatres in Chicago is the top grossing location with just under $5K.

The date is over for Uni’s second weekend of One Night Only at 3,012 theaters with a second weekend of $2M, -64%, and a running cume of $9.86M. Anyone But You, this is not.

Mubi’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma from Jane Schoenbrun had a great hold in its expansion to 54 sites with a strong $16,800 theater average or $907K. The pic expanded in LA and NYC as well as 15 U.S. markets including Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Houston, DC, San Francisco, Seattle and Dallas to name a few. Running cume through ten days is $1.28M across a mix of commercial and arthouse venues. There are reports of sold-out shows and it’s showing potential to break out nicely. The Music Box in Chicago is the highest grossing venue with $39K so far. Schoenbrun’s previous pic, I Saw the TV Glow, finaled at $5M domestic from A24.

FRIDAY AM: Warner Bros/Bad Robot’s PG-13 The End of Oak Street came in at $2.5M for Thursday night U.S. previews. The running global tally is $6.5M with key openings in Italy and France. Global outlook is still $38M WW-$48M WW with the foreign haul likely outweighing domestic. Again, that U.S. preview take is around what Rampage did pre-Covid and under what August family pic Blue Beetle did. End of Oak Street‘s preview cash is also higher than original PG-13 sci-fi movie The Creator ($1.6M) which opened to $14M. Previews are also on par with another original sci-fi movie, though R-rated, Mickey 17 which counted $2.5M and opened to $19M.

'Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie'
‘Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie’Paramount

Paramount and Spin Master’s Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie had previews of $1.9M stateside at 2,800 theaters. The pic bowed in 30 territories last weekend including France, UK and Germany with a running cume that’s now at $35.4M. The domestic outlook is mid-to-high teens. The previous installment, 2023’s Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie didn’t have Thursday night previews, but posted a first Friday of $6.8M and 3-day of $22.7M.

Sony/Marvel Studio’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day ends its second week with $205.7M, with a running domestic cume of $715.8M. That second week is higher than Avengers: Endgame ($186.5M) but under the second week of Star Wars: Force Awakens ($261.1M).

Week’s top 5:

1.) Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Sony) 4,487 theaters, Wk $205.7M (-60%), Total $715.8M/Wk 2

2.) The Odyssey (Uni) 3,603 theaters, Wk $51.7M (-39%), total $481.4M/Wk 4

3.) One Night Only (Uni) 3,012 theaters, Wk $7.8M/Wk 1

5. Minions & Monsters (Uni) 2,451 theaters, Wk $5.77M (-43%) , total $178.6M/Wk 6

THURSDAY PM: This weekend will belong to Sony/Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but the bright new shiny event title hopeful is Warner Bros/Bad Robot’s The End of Oak Street, which in U.S. previews Thursday night is estimated to do around $2 million-plus after showtimes that began at 1 p.m. at 3,200 sites.

Note that it’s still early with that forecast, and this PG-13 feature is leaning family given how women are the most notable on tracking, not just with mothers but also with Anne Hathaway fans. Ewan McGregor also stars. Some PG-13 comps right now include pre-Covid Rampage, which did $2.4M in 2018, and post-Covid Blue Beetle, which did $3.3M in previews and opened in mid-August 2023 to $25M.

Rentrak reports that only 51% of K-12 schools are off as kids head back to school. On the brighter side for the motion picture industry, 95% colleges remain off.

It Follows filmmaker David Robert Mitchell directed, wrote and produced Oak Street, about a neighborhood that suddenly finds itself next door to a prehistoric jungle with dinosaurs who become worse intruders than the neighbor’s dog. The movie will share Imax with Universal’s The Odyssey and PLFs with Spider-Man: Brand New Day for a domestic outlook that’s between $18M-$23M and a foreign estimate between $20M-$25M in 74 territories. The End of Oak Street will pave a way to France, Germany, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, UK, China and Japan this weekend at 24,000 screens. We’ve heard a varying range for the production cost from net $80M to $92M (there’s plenty of VFX in the movie). Rotten Tomatoes critics are at 85% certified fresh.

Also opening wide this weekend is Paramount and Spin Master’s PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie at 3,545 theaters and Angel Studios’ The Brink of War at 2,083 in North America. As we told you, Brand New Day is expecting to do between $57M-$72M in its third weekend stateside.

Tonight’s Thursday preview estimate comes from sources.

Hayden Panettiere poses nearly naked in bathtub in ‘tearful’ final campaign before her death

Hayden Panettiere appears almost naked in a bathtub for an emotional PETA campaign filmed weeks before her death at the age of 36.

The Heroes and Nashville star died in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday. First responders could not revive her after attending the property. Authorities are still investigating Hayden’s death, with no official cause confirmed.

PETA released the finished campaign on Tuesday. In the video, Hayden uses the confined space of a bathtub to illustrate the conditions dolphins and whales face in marine amusement parks.

The newly released PETA film provides a glimpse of Hayden in one of her final campaigns, using her public profile to support a cause she had championed since her teenage years.

One of Hayden Panettiere’s final campaigns for PETA

In the campaign video, Hayden looks directly at the camera as she says: “Imagine spending your entire life in a bathtub. That’s what it’s like for dolphins and whales in tiny tanks at marine amusement parks.”

The actress then asks viewers to consider how captivity may affect the animals. She says: “Can you imagine their frustration, their trauma, their depression? All that’s important and crucial for their well-being is ripped away.”

Hayden also tells viewers: “We can end this. You and me.”

She concludes the video: “Together, we can end this cruelty. Thank you.”

Her work for marine animals stretched back almost two decades. In 2007, Hayden joined activists confronting dolphin hunters off the coast of Taiji in Japan. The events featured in the 2009 documentary The Cove, which won the Oscar for best documentary feature.

She also worked with the Whaleman Foundation and regularly spoke out against marine mammal captivity.

PETA pays tribute to Hayden Panettiere

A PETA representative told Page Six that the campaign shoot took place on July 22. The representative also described Hayden as “wonderful” on set.

PETA senior vice president Lisa Lange later honoured the actress in a statement. She said: “Hayden Panettiere became a household name playing a hero on TV, but to animals, she was the real deal.”

Lange added: “The world has lost a kind soul and the animals a fierce ally, and everyone at PETA holds her memory close.”

The charity described the video as Hayden’s “last act of kindness” and released it as a tribute to her years of animal welfare work.

Hayden Panettiere’s cause of death remains unconfirmed

Authorities have not established Hayden’s official cause of death. TMZ reported that a 911 call referenced a possible overdose and cardiac arrest, but toxicology findings remain outstanding.

Officials said an autopsy found “no signs of trauma” that would have contributed to her death.
