It’s been a quiet year for Russell Crowe thus far after closing out 2024 with Kraven the Hunter, but 11 years ago, the Oscar-winning star featured in a biblical epic that’s returned to streaming charts. Crowe stars alongside Jennifer Connelly and Emma Watson in Noah, the 2014 period drama following Noah (Crowe), who is chosen by God for an important mission ahead of an apocalyptic, world-cleansing flood. Noah is currently streaming for free on Pluto TV in America, but globally, it’s one of the most popular movies in countries such as Lithuania, Venezuela, and Botswana. Noah earned a “certified fresh” 75% from critics and a “rotten” 41% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it also grossed $359 million at the box office against a hefty $120 million budget, making it a solid financial success.
Based on the classic Bible story, Noah comes from the mind of Darren Aronofsky, who directed the film and wrote the script with Ari Handel. Handel also worked with Aronofsky on The Fountain, the 2006 sci-fi epic starring Hugh Jackman, and just a few years ago, he also created Limitless, the National Geographic series starring Chris Hemsworth. Aronofsky most recently helmed The Whale, the 2022 R-rated tragic drama that saw Brendan Fraser win his first Oscar. He will next direct Caught Stealing, a psychological thriller starring Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz that’s coming to theaters on August 29. For Crowe, Noah came just one year after he made his DC debut starring as Jor-El in Man of Steel. Just two years after Noah is when he teamed up with Ryan Gosling for The Nice Guys, the classic comedy from Shane Black.
Russell Crowe’s New Movie Is About to Begin Filming
Collider exclusively brought you the news a few weeks ago that Russell Crowe was joining Henry Cavill’s Highlander reboot, which is due to begin filming in September. John Wick director Chad Stahelski has been tapped to direct the film, and it will be his first non-John Wick movie since he made his directorial debut on the first Keanu Reeves-led action thriller in 2014. Marisa Abela has also been set for a role in Highlander, and Ryan J. Condal (House of the Dragon) is writing the script. The film is expected to be released sometime late next year or early in 2027.
