J.K. Rowling has let the world know her views on many things, the latest being her rift with Harry Potter star Emma Watson — and she did not hold back. In a nearly 700-word post shared to social media, the Wizarding World author tore into Watson’s “ignorant” views on transgender rights, while also revealing the private letter that marked the end of their personal relationship.
The intervention comes after Watson appeared on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast last week, where she spoke at length about the complicated balance of disagreeing with Rowling’s views while still feeling love for the woman who created Hermione Granger. Rowling, however, was less conciliatory, accusing Watson of hypocrisy, privilege, and of acting as a “de facto spokesperson” for the world. Rowling wrote.
Rowling said her relationship with Watson began to fracture in March 2022, when the actress presented at the BAFTA Awards and declared she was “here for all of the witches.” Rowling recalled that moment coming at the height of violent threats against her, and claimed Watson’s words worsened the firestorm.
What wasn’t public at the time, Rowling added, was that Watson later sent her a handwritten note via a third party saying only: “I’m so sorry for what you’re going through.” Rowling wrote:
“Emma had just publicly poured more petrol on the flames, yet thought a one line expression of concern from her would reassure me of her fundamental sympathy and kindness.”
The author went on to accuse Watson of ignorance born from wealth and fame.
“Like other people who’ve never experienced adult life uncushioned by wealth and fame, Emma has so little experience of real life she’s ignorant of how ignorant she is. I wasn’t a multimillionaire at fourteen. I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous. I therefore understand from my own life experience what the trashing of women’s rights in which Emma has so enthusiastically participated means to women and girls without her privileges.”
Rowling said Watson’s recent comments expressing love and gratitude struck her as opportunistic, claiming Watson “noticed full-throated condemnation of me is no longer quite as fashionable as it was.”

Watson’s podcast remarks, however, painted a far gentler picture. Speaking to Shetty, she explained that she doesn’t believe her support of trans rights erases her love for Rowling.
“I think the thing I’m most upset about is that conversation is never made possible. I really don’t believe that by having had that experience and holding the love and support and views that I have, means that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with. I will never believe that one negates the other.”
She added that her stance is rooted in compassion, hoping for a world where disagreement doesn’t erase affection.
“It’s my deepest wish that I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with.”
