Fans react after Emma Watson discusses a change to Belle’s backstory in Beauty and the Beast

Disney fans, prepare yourselves. The upcoming live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast is officially making some major updates to the beloved animated classic, and leading lady Emma Watson just dropped a bombshell about Belle’s brand new backstory.

The internet is officially buzzing after the actress teased that Belle is getting a serious upgrade for the modern era. In the original film, Belle is simply known as the book-loving outcast of her provincial town, while her father, Maurice, is the quirky inventor. But in this new version, directed by Bill Condon, Belle is taking the reigns of the family business.

“In the animated movie, it’s her father who is the inventor, and we actually co-opted that for Belle,” Watson revealed in a new interview with EW.

A Brand New Invention

According to Watson, she and the creative team wanted to add more depth to Belle’s daily life and explain exactly why she did not fit in with the rest of her village. After all, there had to be more to her story than just a love for reading.

“I was like, ‘Well, there was never very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle didn’t fit in, other than she liked books. Also what is she doing with her time?’” Watson explained. “So, we created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead. So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor.”

This clever tweak to the storyline is already sparking massive conversation across social media platforms like X and Instagram, with fans debating whether the change does justice to the original character.

What About Maurice?

With Belle taking over the title of inventor, many fans are wondering what this means for her father, Maurice, played by Kevin Kline.

In this new version, Maurice is a music box maker. This change is not just cosmetic; it actually plays a deep, emotional role in Belle’s upbringing. Set decorator Katie Spencer explained that Maurice’s creations represent his desire to protect his daughter.

“Kevin Kline as Maurice, is making all these music boxes that have to tell the story of Belle not traveling,” Spencer said. “She’s overprotected in a way, by her father, because she’s lost her mother. So, we’ve made all these music boxes that represent different countries of the world, so she can see what she’s missing.”

Social Media Reacts to the News

As expected, the internet has plenty of thoughts on Disney rewriting the history of one of its most iconic princesses.

Many fans are celebrating the move as a major win for female representation. On X, supporters praised the decision to give Belle more agency, with one user writing, “Making Belle an inventor so she has more time to read is the most Emma Watson thing ever, and I am absolutely here for it!”

However, Disney purists are expressing some skepticism. Some worry that changing too many details will ruin the nostalgia of the original film. “Why do they need to change Maurice’s job? Can’t we just have the story we fell in love with?” another fan questioned online.

Despite the mixed reactions, the bold creative choice is a clear step toward giving Disney’s classic female leads more dimension. Whether you are a purist or ready for a fresh take, one thing is for sure: this movie is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of .

Unexpected Team-Up: Prince William and Emma Watson Unite for Change

Prince William had plenty to celebrate this weekend, but his latest public appearance quickly turned heads for a very different reason. After marking his 44th birthday and Father's Day with his family, the future king returned to royal duties—and made a surprisingly personal confession about the emotional toll of climate change.

William joined Hollywood stars Emma Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch at a United for Wildlife forum in London, an initiative he launched with the Royal Foundation in 2013. The organization works around the world to combat wildlife trafficking, environmental crime, and the destruction of endangered species.

But it was William's candid admission about his own fears that stole the spotlight.

The Prince of Wales revealed that climate change has caused him "sleepless nights," admitting he has struggled with anxiety about what the future could look like. Yet instead of allowing those fears to overwhelm him, William said seeing real progress through conservation efforts has helped keep his environmental anxiety under control.

He also delivered a powerful message to business leaders, urging them to become the kind of leaders they admired when they were children. With technology and innovation transforming the world at an incredible pace, William challenged CEOs to use their influence to create meaningful change.

The event launched London Climate Action Week, with more royal appearances expected, including the Earthshot Prize assembly.

Emma Watson also delivered a surprising revelation of her own. The Harry Potter star highlighted the fashion industry's enormous environmental impact, pointing out that it produces more emissions than aviation and ranks behind only oil among major polluting industries.

Watson, who is also pursuing a doctorate in philosophy at Oxford, shared a hilarious story about mistakenly believing paparazzi were following her. After spotting photographers with telephoto lenses, she arranged a distraction and escaped through another exit. The twist? They weren't photographing her at all. They were waiting to capture a red kite.

Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch praised William as "a great guy" and urged businesses and individuals to recognize that they can still make a difference, even when global environmental challenges appear overwhelming.

With William, Watson, and Cumberbatch joining forces on the issue, the London forum delivered a clear message: the fight against environmental destruction is becoming impossible for the world's biggest names to ignore.
