Evanna Lynch, who famously brought the quirky and beloved Luna Lovegood to life, is opening up about her experience joining the Harry Potter franchise. While fans have spent years obsessing over the “Dramione” chemistry between Emma Watson and Tom Felton, Lynch admits she felt a little left out of the loop.
In a recent interview with Us Weekly, the actress joked that she was “disappointed” to have missed the peak era of on-set romances and “raging hormones.”
Lynch joined the magical series in its fifth installment, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. While her character quickly became a fan favorite for her unconventional wisdom and “zany” nature, Lynch says the social atmosphere off-camera had already shifted by the time she stepped onto set.
“Oh, it was so disappointing for me because I joined on the fifth one,” Lynch told the outlet. “I was on Order of the Phoenix and there was this sense that exciting things had happened in the last movie, and I just missed it.”
The actress noted that while the fourth film, The Goblet of Fire, seemed to be the peak of the cast’s teenage angst—thanks in part to the iconic Yule Ball—things were much more professional by the time she arrived.
“[I joined when] everyone had kind of grown out of their crushes and they were moving on to, like, people in the outside world,” she explained. “And I felt that like, damn, I missed all the drama!”
Fans of the franchise know exactly the “drama” she’s referring to. Emma Watson, who played the brilliant Hermione Granger, famously admitted back in that she had a major crush on her on-screen rival, Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy).
“For the first two movies, I had a crush on Tom Felton,” Watson previously shared. “He was my first crush.”
The duo has kept the rumor mill spinning for years, especially after sharing a cozy photo together during a holiday in South Africa in . Felton himself added fuel to the fire recently, describing his bond with Watson as “something, if that makes any sense.”
But for Lynch, the timing just wasn’t right to see the sparks fly in person.
“It was so fun the last film, according to some stories,” Lynch added. “But no, by the time I got there, they were all mature and those hormones were calming down.”
While she may have missed the dating drama, Lynch’s journey to the screen was a magical story in its own right. As a young girl, she battled anorexia and credited the Harry Potter books for helping her through her recovery.
