Emma Watson is finding the humor in a “humbling” situation.
The Harry Potter alum, , is speaking out for the first time regarding her six-month driving ban, revealing that seeing her private “shame” turn into a global news cycle was an experience she won’t soon forget.
During a wide-ranging appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, Watson got candid about the July speeding incident that led a U.K. court to suspend her license for six months on July , . According to BBC News, the star already had nine points on her license before the incident and was ordered to pay a fine of £, ($,).
“I recently started riding a bicycle,” Watson told Shetty with a laugh, noting the timing was quite “fortuitous” given her current legal status. “Yes, I started riding a bicycle before my driving ban, but now it’s particularly fortuitous that I also ride a bicycle for that reason.”
The actress, who has largely stepped back from the spotlight since ’s Little Women, admitted she was stunned by how quickly the story went viral.
“I was getting phone calls. Like, it’s on the BBC, it was on international, worldwide news!” she shared. “I was like, ‘My shame….’ It is everywhere.”
However, the internet’s response wasn’t all judgment. Watson revealed she received a wave of support from fans and friends on social media who related to her struggle. “I got so many messages from people who told me, ‘It happened to me too,’ and ‘I feel you, this is awful, it sucks.’”
Watson explained that her lack of “road skills” actually stems from her decades spent as a child star. Because of insurance and scheduling, actors are rarely allowed to drive themselves to work.
“When you worked on movies… they literally will not insure you to drive yourself to work,” she explained. “You have to be driven. It’s not a choice. Especially because they need you there down to the minute.”
After spending her formative years being shuttled to and from the Potter sets, Watson says the transition to “normal” life has been a learning curve.
“I went from basically only driving myself on weekends or during holidays to when I became a student, driving myself all the time,” she said. “I did not have the experience or skills, clearly, which I now will and do.”
She continued, “It’s been a discovery and a journey that’s been, I guess, humbling. Because on a movie set, I’m able to do all of these like extremely complex things—stunts, sing, dance… and then I get home and I’m like, ‘Emma, you seem unable to remember keys, wallet, keep yourself at miles an hour in a -mile speed limit.’”
Shetty, , even offered a “confession” of his own, admitting he was nearly at the limit for losing his license before moving to the States.
“Thank you for that confession,” Watson joked. “A lot of people have taken it upon themselves to come and confess to me, which I found very endearing.”

Unexpected Team-Up: Prince William and Emma Watson Unite for Change
Prince William had plenty to celebrate this weekend, but his latest public appearance quickly turned heads for a very different reason. After marking his 44th birthday and Father's Day with his family, the future king returned to royal duties—and made a surprisingly personal confession about the emotional toll of climate change.
William joined Hollywood stars Emma Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch at a United for Wildlife forum in London, an initiative he launched with the Royal Foundation in 2013. The organization works around the world to combat wildlife trafficking, environmental crime, and the destruction of endangered species.
But it was William's candid admission about his own fears that stole the spotlight.

The Prince of Wales revealed that climate change has caused him "sleepless nights," admitting he has struggled with anxiety about what the future could look like. Yet instead of allowing those fears to overwhelm him, William said seeing real progress through conservation efforts has helped keep his environmental anxiety under control.
He also delivered a powerful message to business leaders, urging them to become the kind of leaders they admired when they were children. With technology and innovation transforming the world at an incredible pace, William challenged CEOs to use their influence to create meaningful change.
The event launched London Climate Action Week, with more royal appearances expected, including the Earthshot Prize assembly.

Emma Watson also delivered a surprising revelation of her own. The Harry Potter star highlighted the fashion industry's enormous environmental impact, pointing out that it produces more emissions than aviation and ranks behind only oil among major polluting industries.
Watson, who is also pursuing a doctorate in philosophy at Oxford, shared a hilarious story about mistakenly believing paparazzi were following her. After spotting photographers with telephoto lenses, she arranged a distraction and escaped through another exit. The twist? They weren't photographing her at all. They were waiting to capture a red kite.
Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch praised William as "a great guy" and urged businesses and individuals to recognize that they can still make a difference, even when global environmental challenges appear overwhelming.

With William, Watson, and Cumberbatch joining forces on the issue, the London forum delivered a clear message: the fight against environmental destruction is becoming impossible for the world's biggest names to ignore.
