Emma Watson says she left acting because it felt 'soul-destroying': 'I do not miss selling things'

Emma Watson is pulling back the curtain on why she’s been missing from our movie screens for over half a decade.

The Harry Potter alum, , hasn’t starred in a feature film since ’s Little Women, and in a rare, vulnerable interview with Hollywood Authentic published Sunday, Sept. , she’s finally explaining why. While she “profoundly” misses the art of acting, there is one part of the Hollywood machine she is happy to leave behind.

“I think I’ll be honest and straightforward, and say: I do not miss selling things,” Watson confessed. “I found that to be quite soul-destroying.”

The actress explained that while she feels she “won the lottery” with her career, the balance between creating art and the grueling cycle of promotion became too much to bear.

“A bigger component than the actual job itself is the promotion and selling of that piece of work, this piece of art,” she noted. “I just found I got to do so little of the bit that I actually enjoyed.”

Fans on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok have been quick to praise the star for her honesty, with many calling her perspective a “breath of fresh air” in an industry obsessed with constant visibility.

For Watson, the “bit she enjoyed” was the work itself—the intense, quiet moments on a film set that served as a getaway from the real world.

“Getting to just completely forget about everything else in the world other than that one moment — it’s such an intense form of meditation,” she shared. “It’s so freeing. I miss that profoundly.”

However, even a small return to the craft reminded her of the heavy weight of expectations. Watson revealed that even doing a “small thing for a play” with friends recently felt incredibly “stressful.”

“I was like, ‘Bloody hell, this is stressful!’ And that wasn’t even for a real public audience,” she joked. “I don’t miss that.”

Stepping away from the spotlight has allowed the activist and actress to shed what she calls the “multiple identities” of being a public persona. She admitted that maintaining a famous image requires “constant feeding and sprucing,” which can be “energy-intensive stuff.”

By stepping back, Watson says she has found more space to be a “better sister, daughter, friend, granddaughter and then artist.”

As for her health? She tells the outlet she is “maybe the happiest and healthiest I’ve ever been.”

But don’t count her out just yet. While she’s holding the big screen at arm’s length, Watson teased that she is currently “working on something that I’ve never done before.” She declined to give specifics, but it’s clear that whatever comes next will be on her own terms.

Unexpected Team-Up: Prince William and Emma Watson Unite for Change

Prince William had plenty to celebrate this weekend, but his latest public appearance quickly turned heads for a very different reason. After marking his 44th birthday and Father's Day with his family, the future king returned to royal duties—and made a surprisingly personal confession about the emotional toll of climate change.

William joined Hollywood stars Emma Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch at a United for Wildlife forum in London, an initiative he launched with the Royal Foundation in 2013. The organization works around the world to combat wildlife trafficking, environmental crime, and the destruction of endangered species.

But it was William's candid admission about his own fears that stole the spotlight.

The Prince of Wales revealed that climate change has caused him "sleepless nights," admitting he has struggled with anxiety about what the future could look like. Yet instead of allowing those fears to overwhelm him, William said seeing real progress through conservation efforts has helped keep his environmental anxiety under control.

He also delivered a powerful message to business leaders, urging them to become the kind of leaders they admired when they were children. With technology and innovation transforming the world at an incredible pace, William challenged CEOs to use their influence to create meaningful change.

The event launched London Climate Action Week, with more royal appearances expected, including the Earthshot Prize assembly.

Emma Watson also delivered a surprising revelation of her own. The Harry Potter star highlighted the fashion industry's enormous environmental impact, pointing out that it produces more emissions than aviation and ranks behind only oil among major polluting industries.

Watson, who is also pursuing a doctorate in philosophy at Oxford, shared a hilarious story about mistakenly believing paparazzi were following her. After spotting photographers with telephoto lenses, she arranged a distraction and escaped through another exit. The twist? They weren't photographing her at all. They were waiting to capture a red kite.

Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch praised William as "a great guy" and urged businesses and individuals to recognize that they can still make a difference, even when global environmental challenges appear overwhelming.

With William, Watson, and Cumberbatch joining forces on the issue, the London forum delivered a clear message: the fight against environmental destruction is becoming impossible for the world's biggest names to ignore.
