Emma Watson's Self-Partnering Message Inspires New Approaches to Relationships

When Harry Potter star Emma Watson first described herself as “self-partnered” in 2019, the phrase quickly became shorthand for a new kind of relationship status, one based more on self-fulfilment rather than romantic partnership.

At the time, she explained that approaching 30 had triggered anxiety about milestones like marriage and children, before she realised she was “very happy” being single and preferred the more intentional label of self-partnered.

Years later, the idea continues to resonate, and Watson’s own views on relationships still align with that philosophy. In a more recent interview, she described societal pressure to marry as a form of “cruelty” and emphasised that partnership should come from wanting someone, not needing them, adding that she now has “a life that’s whole and complete as it is.”

While she has had her fair share of public romances, including a relationship with Brandon Green from 2021 to 2023, and a recent rumoured relationship with Mexican businessman and entrepreneur Gonzalo Hevia Baillères, the movie star has largely kept her current romantic life private, driving home the sense that independence remains a huge part of her views.

Choosing yourself first

Despite how it sounds, self-partnering isn’t necessarily about rejecting relationships. Instead, it views singlehood as an intentional space for growth, stability, and emotional self-reliance. Mental health experts have suggested that the language itself can be powerful.

In a Business Insider article, Niels Eék, co-founder of a mental health app, explains that reframing the term “single” as “self-partnered” can encourage people to view themselves as whole and fulfilled rather than incomplete. This shift in perspective has the potential to reduce anxiety and enhance overall well-being.

This shift reflects a broader cultural move away from traditional timelines and toward autonomy. Increasingly, people are prioritising personal development, careers, friendships and self-knowledge, with romantic partnership becoming a choice rather than a benchmark.

When self-partnering becomes symbolic

For some, the idea extends beyond language into lifestyle. The rise of “sologamy” or self-marriage has seen people hold ceremonies committing to themselves. The practice is symbolic rather than legally binding, like an actual marriage, but supporters say it affirms self-worth and independence.

Italian fitness trainer Laura Mesi drew global attention in 2017 when she held a solo wedding complete with a dress, cake and guests, explaining she believed each person should first love themselves and that “you can have a fairytale even without the prince.”

In a similar fashion, Indian woman Kshama Bindu described her self-marriage as “a commitment to be there for yourself and love yourself unconditionally,” framing it as an act of self-acceptance.

A relationship… with yourself

Essentially, what Watson’s phrase did was give language to something many people were already practising: prioritising self-knowledge, building a full life alone and choosing partnership from desire rather than pressure.

Whether it’s quietly embracing singlehood or walking down the aisle solo, the message behind self-partnering is the same. Being in a relationship with yourself is no longer seen as a placeholder; it’s increasingly becoming the foundation.

Unexpected Team-Up: Prince William and Emma Watson Unite for Change

Prince William had plenty to celebrate this weekend, but his latest public appearance quickly turned heads for a very different reason. After marking his 44th birthday and Father's Day with his family, the future king returned to royal duties—and made a surprisingly personal confession about the emotional toll of climate change.

William joined Hollywood stars Emma Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch at a United for Wildlife forum in London, an initiative he launched with the Royal Foundation in 2013. The organization works around the world to combat wildlife trafficking, environmental crime, and the destruction of endangered species.

But it was William's candid admission about his own fears that stole the spotlight.

The Prince of Wales revealed that climate change has caused him "sleepless nights," admitting he has struggled with anxiety about what the future could look like. Yet instead of allowing those fears to overwhelm him, William said seeing real progress through conservation efforts has helped keep his environmental anxiety under control.

He also delivered a powerful message to business leaders, urging them to become the kind of leaders they admired when they were children. With technology and innovation transforming the world at an incredible pace, William challenged CEOs to use their influence to create meaningful change.

The event launched London Climate Action Week, with more royal appearances expected, including the Earthshot Prize assembly.

Emma Watson also delivered a surprising revelation of her own. The Harry Potter star highlighted the fashion industry's enormous environmental impact, pointing out that it produces more emissions than aviation and ranks behind only oil among major polluting industries.

Watson, who is also pursuing a doctorate in philosophy at Oxford, shared a hilarious story about mistakenly believing paparazzi were following her. After spotting photographers with telephoto lenses, she arranged a distraction and escaped through another exit. The twist? They weren't photographing her at all. They were waiting to capture a red kite.

Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch praised William as "a great guy" and urged businesses and individuals to recognize that they can still make a difference, even when global environmental challenges appear overwhelming.

With William, Watson, and Cumberbatch joining forces on the issue, the London forum delivered a clear message: the fight against environmental destruction is becoming impossible for the world's biggest names to ignore.
