Emma Watson Proposes a New Backstory for Belle in 'Beauty and the Beast'

Disney is on a massive winning streak with its live-action reimagining of classic films, but the upcoming release of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ might just be the most talked-about yet.

Following a highly anticipated first look photo drop, fans on social media are buzzing over a shocking new revelation from the film’s star, Emma Watson. The actress has revealed that she helped completely rewrite Belle’s history, giving the iconic princess a brand new, empowering occupation.

In a move that is already generating passionate debates across platforms like X and Instagram, the live-action Belle will officially be stepping out of her father’s shadow to become an inventor herself.

From Bookworm to Brilliant Inventor

In the beloved animated original, Belle’s eccentric father, Maurice, is the brilliant mind behind the family’s wild contraptions. However, Watson felt the original story did not give the audience enough context about Belle’s daily life or why her French village viewed her as such an outcast.

“In the animated movie, it’s her father who is the inventor, and we actually co-opted that for Belle,” Watson shared with EW. “I was like, ‘Well, there was never very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle didn’t fit in, other than she liked books. Also what is she doing with her time?’”

To solve this narrative mystery, Watson and the creative team got inventive.

“We created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead,” Watson explained. “So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor.”

A Touching Twist for her Father Maurice

With Belle taking over the family trade, her father Maurice, played by Oscar winner Kevin Kline, is getting a creative promotion of his own. In the Bill Condon-directed film, Maurice will now be a maker of intricate music boxes.

According to set decorator Katie Spencer, these music boxes are not just for show; they play a deeply emotional role in Belle’s upbringing.

“Maurice is making all these music boxes that have to tell the story of Belle not traveling,” Spencer explained. “She’s overprotected in a way, by her father, because she’s lost her mother. So, we’ve made all these music boxes that represent different countries of the world, so she can see what she’s missing.”

Disney Purists React to the Big Change

While many fans are applauding Disney’s decision to add more depth to its female leads, others are feeling a bit protective of the animated masterpiece. Remaking a film as sacred as ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is always a gamble, and the internet is already filled with passionate reactions.

“I love Emma, but why do we need to change Belle’s original story?” one user questioned on X. “Her father being the quirky inventor was their whole dynamic!”

On the other hand, plenty of fans are celebrating the change as a brave and modern update. “An inventing, book-reading queen! This is exactly the kind of role model young girls need,” a fan gushed on Instagram.

Disney has faced criticism in the past for a lack of depth in its earliest princess movies. Giving Belle her own passion for engineering is a major step in a new direction, and we cannot wait to see how it plays out on the big screen.

Unexpected Team-Up: Prince William and Emma Watson Unite for Change

Prince William had plenty to celebrate this weekend, but his latest public appearance quickly turned heads for a very different reason. After marking his 44th birthday and Father's Day with his family, the future king returned to royal duties—and made a surprisingly personal confession about the emotional toll of climate change.

William joined Hollywood stars Emma Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch at a United for Wildlife forum in London, an initiative he launched with the Royal Foundation in 2013. The organization works around the world to combat wildlife trafficking, environmental crime, and the destruction of endangered species.

But it was William's candid admission about his own fears that stole the spotlight.

The Prince of Wales revealed that climate change has caused him "sleepless nights," admitting he has struggled with anxiety about what the future could look like. Yet instead of allowing those fears to overwhelm him, William said seeing real progress through conservation efforts has helped keep his environmental anxiety under control.

He also delivered a powerful message to business leaders, urging them to become the kind of leaders they admired when they were children. With technology and innovation transforming the world at an incredible pace, William challenged CEOs to use their influence to create meaningful change.

The event launched London Climate Action Week, with more royal appearances expected, including the Earthshot Prize assembly.

Emma Watson also delivered a surprising revelation of her own. The Harry Potter star highlighted the fashion industry's enormous environmental impact, pointing out that it produces more emissions than aviation and ranks behind only oil among major polluting industries.

Watson, who is also pursuing a doctorate in philosophy at Oxford, shared a hilarious story about mistakenly believing paparazzi were following her. After spotting photographers with telephoto lenses, she arranged a distraction and escaped through another exit. The twist? They weren't photographing her at all. They were waiting to capture a red kite.

Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch praised William as "a great guy" and urged businesses and individuals to recognize that they can still make a difference, even when global environmental challenges appear overwhelming.

With William, Watson, and Cumberbatch joining forces on the issue, the London forum delivered a clear message: the fight against environmental destruction is becoming impossible for the world's biggest names to ignore.
