Emma Watson Discusses Her Relationship with J.K. Rowling and Shares Her Views on Cancel Culture

Emma Watson is taking a stand for nuance in an increasingly polarized world.

The Harry Potter alum is officially breaking her silence on her complex relationship with author J.K. Rowling following years of public tension over Rowling’s controversial comments regarding the transgender community.

Appearing on a recent episode of The Jay Shetty Podcast, the -year-old actress and activist made it clear that while she stands firm in her own beliefs, she isn’t ready to “throw out” the woman who helped start her career.

“I just see this world right now where we seem to be giving permission to this throwing out of people, or that people are disposable,” Watson told Shetty. “I will always think that’s wrong.”

The moment has quickly gone viral, sparking intense conversation across TikTok and X (formerly Twitter).

For years, headlines have focused on the “Big Three”—Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint—and their perceived distancing from the author. However, Watson says her love for “Jo” and the memories they shared isn’t something she is willing to delete from her life.

“I really don’t believe that by having had that experience and holding the love and support and views that I have, mean that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with,” Watson explained.

The actress, who has long been a vocal advocate for women’s and LGBTQ+ rights, added, “I will never believe that one negates the other.”

Fans have been quick to react to the interview, with many praising Watson’s “maturity” and “grace.” On social media, supporters noted that it takes courage to hold space for both gratitude and disagreement.

However, the internet remains divided. Some users questioned whether a bridge can truly be built given the intensity of the ongoing debate surrounding Rowling’s stances.

The tension reached a boiling point back in March when Rowling suggested in an X post that her disagreements with Watson and Radcliffe had soured her impression of the films. This followed multiple instances where both actors publicly voiced their support for transgender rights in direct response to essays penned by the author.

Despite the back-and-forth, Watson isn’t closing the door on a potential reconciliation.

When asked by Shetty if she was open to a dialogue with the author, Watson agreed, though she admitted she’s hesitant to “weaponize a really toxic debate.”

“I think the thing I’m most upset about is that a conversation was never made possible,” she admitted candidly.

Watson was cast as the iconic Hermione Granger at just nine years old, and those formative years remain a core part of her identity. She noted that she remains deeply grateful for the “kindness and words of encouragement” Rowling showed her during that whirlwind time.

“There is just no world in which I could ever cancel her out,” Watson said firmly. “I can love her, I can know she loved me, I can be grateful to her… and there can be this whole other thing. My job feels like to just hold all of it.”

As for the future, Watson’s “deepest wish” is a simple one: that we can all disagree without losing our humanity.

“I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me,” she said, “and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with.”

Unexpected Team-Up: Prince William and Emma Watson Unite for Change

Prince William had plenty to celebrate this weekend, but his latest public appearance quickly turned heads for a very different reason. After marking his 44th birthday and Father's Day with his family, the future king returned to royal duties—and made a surprisingly personal confession about the emotional toll of climate change.

William joined Hollywood stars Emma Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch at a United for Wildlife forum in London, an initiative he launched with the Royal Foundation in 2013. The organization works around the world to combat wildlife trafficking, environmental crime, and the destruction of endangered species.

But it was William's candid admission about his own fears that stole the spotlight.

The Prince of Wales revealed that climate change has caused him "sleepless nights," admitting he has struggled with anxiety about what the future could look like. Yet instead of allowing those fears to overwhelm him, William said seeing real progress through conservation efforts has helped keep his environmental anxiety under control.

He also delivered a powerful message to business leaders, urging them to become the kind of leaders they admired when they were children. With technology and innovation transforming the world at an incredible pace, William challenged CEOs to use their influence to create meaningful change.

The event launched London Climate Action Week, with more royal appearances expected, including the Earthshot Prize assembly.

Emma Watson also delivered a surprising revelation of her own. The Harry Potter star highlighted the fashion industry's enormous environmental impact, pointing out that it produces more emissions than aviation and ranks behind only oil among major polluting industries.

Watson, who is also pursuing a doctorate in philosophy at Oxford, shared a hilarious story about mistakenly believing paparazzi were following her. After spotting photographers with telephoto lenses, she arranged a distraction and escaped through another exit. The twist? They weren't photographing her at all. They were waiting to capture a red kite.

Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch praised William as "a great guy" and urged businesses and individuals to recognize that they can still make a difference, even when global environmental challenges appear overwhelming.

With William, Watson, and Cumberbatch joining forces on the issue, the London forum delivered a clear message: the fight against environmental destruction is becoming impossible for the world's biggest names to ignore.
