Emma Watson is proving that even in the face of “extremely hurtful” public disagreements, there is still room for grace.
The Harry Potter star sat down for a deeply personal conversation on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, where she addressed the elephant in the room: her fractured relationship with Wizarding World creator J.K. Rowling.
For years, Watson and her co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint have been at odds with Rowling over the author’s controversial views on transgender rights. But despite the digital firestorm that has divided the fandom, Watson says she isn’t letting go of the bond they once shared during her childhood.
“I really don’t believe that by having had that experience, and holding the love and support and views that I have, mean that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with,” Watson told Shetty.
The actress, who brought Hermione Granger to life for over a decade, has long been a staunch advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. Following Rowling’s essay questioning transgender identities, Watson famously took to X (formerly Twitter) to declare her stance, writing, “Trans people are who they say they are.”
However, the back-and-forth hasn’t been a one-way street. As recently as March , Rowling appeared to shade her former stars on social media, suggesting she wouldn’t accept apologies from those who “used their platforms to erode the hard-won rights of women.”
Reflecting on the rift, Watson admitted to Shetty that the lack of communication has been the most painful part of the experience.
“The thing I’m most upset about is that a conversation was never made possible,” she shared. It’s a sentiment that has resonated deeply across social media, with fans on TikTok praising her for her emotional maturity and her refusal to “cancel” someone who was a major part of her life.
Even so, she’s holding out hope for a future defined by empathy rather than “cancel culture.”
“I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with,” she added.
It wasn’t all heavy talk, though! Watson also showed off her trademark wit when discussing a much more “grounded” topic: her recent six-month driving ban.
The actress was stripped of her license after a speeding incident in Oxford last July. Rather than hiding from the headlines, Watson laughed along with Shetty about the international coverage of the mishap.
“I was like, my shame is everywhere,” she giggled, before revealing her new, eco-friendly mode of transportation.
“I recently started riding a bicycle,” she explained, calling the timing of her new hobby “particularly fortuitous” given her current legal inability to get behind the wheel of a car.
From navigating complex ideological divides to pedaling through the English countryside, Emma Watson is showing the world exactly how to handle life’s bumps in the road with total class. Whether she’s defending human rights or poking fun at her own driving record, the “real-life Hermione” continues to lead with heart.
Unexpected Team-Up: Prince William and Emma Watson Unite for Change
Prince William had plenty to celebrate this weekend, but his latest public appearance quickly turned heads for a very different reason. After marking his 44th birthday and Father's Day with his family, the future king returned to royal duties—and made a surprisingly personal confession about the emotional toll of climate change.
William joined Hollywood stars Emma Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch at a United for Wildlife forum in London, an initiative he launched with the Royal Foundation in 2013. The organization works around the world to combat wildlife trafficking, environmental crime, and the destruction of endangered species.
But it was William's candid admission about his own fears that stole the spotlight.

The Prince of Wales revealed that climate change has caused him "sleepless nights," admitting he has struggled with anxiety about what the future could look like. Yet instead of allowing those fears to overwhelm him, William said seeing real progress through conservation efforts has helped keep his environmental anxiety under control.
He also delivered a powerful message to business leaders, urging them to become the kind of leaders they admired when they were children. With technology and innovation transforming the world at an incredible pace, William challenged CEOs to use their influence to create meaningful change.
The event launched London Climate Action Week, with more royal appearances expected, including the Earthshot Prize assembly.

Emma Watson also delivered a surprising revelation of her own. The Harry Potter star highlighted the fashion industry's enormous environmental impact, pointing out that it produces more emissions than aviation and ranks behind only oil among major polluting industries.
Watson, who is also pursuing a doctorate in philosophy at Oxford, shared a hilarious story about mistakenly believing paparazzi were following her. After spotting photographers with telephoto lenses, she arranged a distraction and escaped through another exit. The twist? They weren't photographing her at all. They were waiting to capture a red kite.
Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch praised William as "a great guy" and urged businesses and individuals to recognize that they can still make a difference, even when global environmental challenges appear overwhelming.

With William, Watson, and Cumberbatch joining forces on the issue, the London forum delivered a clear message: the fight against environmental destruction is becoming impossible for the world's biggest names to ignore.
