Released in 2014, Noah stars Russell Crowe as the title character, with Aronofsky turning the Old Testament story into a large-scale fantasy drama about faith, destruction, and survival. The movie was a major box office hit, grossing more than $350 million worldwide. The cast includes Crowe as Noah, Jennifer Connelly as Naameh, Emma Watson as Ila, Logan Lerman as Ham, Douglas Booth as Shem, Ray Winstone as Tubal-cain, and Anthony Hopkins as Methuselah.

Collider’s review stated that Noah feels like a fascinating but uneven step in the director’s evolution — a film packed with ambition, yet weighed down by compromises that dilute its most compelling ideas. While Aronofsky leans into his signature themes of morality, faith, and humanity’s darker instincts, the review noted that the film often gets sidetracked trying to explain its own logic, which ends up softening the emotional and philosophical impact at its core. The review highlighted how Noah works best when it embraces its deeper questions — particularly around free will, obedience, and whether humanity is even worth saving.
"If Aronofsky shares anything with one of his film's themes, it's the difficulty of both destruction and rebirth. Noah could very well mark a turning point in his artistic development, and it's impossible to know if this is the end of the Aronofsky I respect or the beginning of a new one I'll admire even more. Even though the movie has its share of disappointments, it also has exciting possibilities both in the subtext and the filmmaking. For humanity, Noah lays out a path of despair and a path of hope. I won't say which one it chooses, but for Darren Aronofsky, I continue to hope."
