Jennifer Lawrence is known for her “no-filter” personality, but even for her, telling a Hollywood legend to hit the bricks takes some serious guts.
The Hunger Games star recently opened up about her nuptials to art dealer Cooke Maroney, revealing that the “joy” of the occasion was slightly overshadowed by some major bridal anxiety.
While speaking with E! News on the red carpet, Lawrence admitted that the pressure of hosting a star-studded guest list was far from a “Silver Linings” experience.
“It’s so stressful,” Lawrence shared. “You’re not having fun. You’re just like, ‘Is that person having fun?’”
That “person” just happened to be her longtime friend and frequent collaborator, Robert De Niro. The two stars have appeared together in several films, including Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, and Joy.
As Lawrence scanned the room at her rehearsal dinner, she noticed the -year-old icon looking a bit like a fish out of water.
“I looked over and I saw Bob, who doesn’t know anybody and he’s kind of wandering around,” Lawrence recalled. “I immediately was like, ‘No, this isn’t what he wants to be doing. I don’t want him here.’”
Most people would be thrilled to have a two-time Oscar winner at their party, but Lawrence was more concerned with De Niro’s comfort than the guest count.
Acting on instinct, the actress walked over to the Godfather star and gave him an unexpected exit cue.
“So I went over and whispered, I was like, ‘Go home,’” she said.
Luckily, De Niro took the request in stride. Lawrence noted that he was “nice” and “polite,” even taking the time to chat with her parents before making his getaway.
“I was like, ‘Go,’” she continued, adding that his departure was a massive relief. “That just genuinely made me feel better.”
But the De Niro drama wasn’t the only thing keeping the bride on edge. As the festivities moved to the Belcourt of Newport mansion in Rhode Island, Lawrence became fixated on the dropping temperatures.
While her friends tried to play it cool—literally—her mother, Karen Lawrence, wasn’t about to sugarcoat the situation.
“I’ll never forget — I was freaking out about the guests being cold, and all of my friends were lying,” Lawrence remembered. “They’re like, ‘Nobody’s cold, nobody’s cold, everything’s fine.’”
Her mom had a different take: “My mom was like, ‘It’s freezing out there, your grandmother almost died.’”
Despite the weather woes and the “polite” ejection of Hollywood royalty, Lawrence and Maroney successfully tied the knot in front of a massive crowd of guests, including stars like Adele, Amy Schumer, and Kris Jenner.
It seems that even for an A-lister, wedding planning is enough to make anyone want to send Robert De Niro home for the night!
