The torch has officially been passed in Panem—but not without a little bit of playful drama!
Rachel Zegler is opening up about the moment she finally met the woman who started it all, Jennifer Lawrence, and it turns out the encounter was just as chaotic and charming as fans would expect from the OG Katniss Everdeen.
While appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the West Side Story breakout star recalled the nerve-wracking lead-up to meeting Lawrence at the Christian Dior runway show during Paris Fashion Week.
“I didn’t want to be weird,” Zegler told host Kelly Clarkson, admitting she had to take a moment to prepare herself. “I was just kind of psyching myself up to talk to her.”
Despite the pressure of being the only cast member from the new prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, to have met the Oscar winner, Zegler says Lawrence couldn’t have been more welcoming.
“She was so unbelievably kind,” Zegler gushed.
However, it was a specific photo from the event that sent the internet into a frenzy. In the viral snap, Lawrence is seen with her hands playfully around Zegler’s neck, sporting a mock-serious expression while Zegler laughs.
Zegler finally set the record straight on what was actually being said in that moment, and it’s pure J-Law gold.
“In that clip, [Jennifer is] actually saying, ‘Let’s do another photo where I’m strangling you and saying you’ll never take my part!’” Zegler revealed.
The actress added with a laugh, “And that’s exactly what I wanted from her.”
The “passing of the bow” comes as Zegler takes center stage in the franchise’s highly anticipated prequel. Set years before Katniss Everdeen volunteered as tribute, the film explores the origins of the Hunger Games and a young Coriolanus Snow.
Zegler plays Lucy Gray Baird, a tribute from District —the same district Lawrence’s Katniss would represent decades later.
In the film, a young Snow (played by Tom Blyth) is tasked with mentoring Lucy Gray, the girl who “sings like a bird” and captures the attention of the Capitol. It’s a far cry from the tyrannical President Snow fans grew to hate in the original trilogy.
While the stakes are life-and-death on screen, the off-screen bond between the two District leading ladies is clearly all love.
Zegler joins an A-list ensemble for the prequel, including Peter Dinklage, Hunter Schafer, Jason Schwartzman, and the legendary Viola Davis.
Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film is based on the novel by Suzanne Collins and promises to give fans a deeper look at how the world of Panem became the dystopian nightmare we know today.
As for Zegler, she seems to have secured Lawrence’s seal of approval—even if it came with a side of mock-strangulation!

Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are reportedly returning to the world of Panem, reprising their iconic roles as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in Lionsgate’s highly anticipated prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Sunrise on the Reaping centers on the 50th Hunger Games, known as the Second Quarter Quell. This particular Games was designed to be especially brutal, with twice the usual number of tributes being sent into the arena. The story follows a young Haymitch as he struggles to survive one of the most devastating and psychologically intense Games in Panem’s history.
Bringing Katniss and Peeta into the story through a framing sequence could create an emotional connection between Haymitch’s past and the characters fans have followed since the beginning of the franchise. It also gives Lawrence and Hutcherson a chance to return without changing the events established in the original films.
