Twenty years after the release of Fantastic Four, Jessica Alba addresses the scene she found "humiliating" to film. Alba played Sue Storm/Invisible Woman in the 2005 movie and in the sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
A scene that aged poorly in Fantastic Four is when Sue has to take all her clothes off during the bridge rescue so she can be fully invisible and sneak past the police undetected. At one point, she is seen by hundreds of onlookers, wearing nothing but her bra and underwear. This is not the only time that the films have Sue undressed while using her powers.
At the Red Sea Film Festival, Alba reflected on the bridge rescue as her "least favorite scene" to film in both Fantastic Four movies. As a "pretty modest person" from "a pretty conservative family," she details how anxious she was to film the scene, and that it ended up being a deeply negative experience. I thought that was awful. It was very humiliating in real life. I grew up with a pretty conservative family, and I am a pretty modest person. I dreaded that scene for weeks.
Despite this, Alba "loved" many aspects of playing Sue and how she helped break the mold for female superheroes in the 2000s, as someone who stood up for herself and others, was honest, and did not need to be saved.
She was a woman I looked up to. She was very maternal and very kind, but also not a pushover; she spoke her mind. She had a great moral compass. No matter who you are, you can look up to her. Oftentimes, the women in these stories need to be saved by a guy or the villain, the problem in the story. This was back then. It’s different now.
When asked if she'd seen the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Fantastic Four: First Steps, where Sue is played by Vanessa Kirby, Alba admits that she hasn't watched it yet, but it is something she looks forward to watching with her family.
I usually watch those movies with my kids, and if Sonic was out, my son wants to watch it 85 times in a row. When it comes to movies that are for the family, my kids dominate what we watch for sure. But I have to convince him because we have to see it! I love Marvel, and they’re so fun.
While Alba specifically focused on the bridge scene, this was not her only negative experience when making these films. Rise of the Silver Surfer nearly made Jessica Alba quit acting after director Tim Story told her that her performance was too "real" and "painful" and asked that she "be prettier when you cry? Cry pretty, Jessica."
Alba ultimately continued to act, though, and worked with Robert Rodriguez on multiple projects. She shared at the Red Sea Film Festival that she and Rodriguez are working on a new film together as well, with a cast that is entirely Latino.
We’re putting together a really fun action movie, like a family dramedy inside a heist movie. We’re pitching that now to studios. It’s going to be really fun.
Another upcoming project for Alba is A Tree is Blue, which is Dakota Johnson's directorial debut. Alba stars in the film along with Charli XCX and Vanessa Burghardt, and teased details about the story and how she hopes to see it screened at the Red Sea Film Festival next year.
It’s about a mom and a daughter who wants her independence. It would be amazing to be able to show it [at Red Sea] next year when it’s finished.
Years after making the Fantastic Four movies, Alba now has her own production company as well, with the name of Lady Metalmark Entertainment. She hopes it can "change minds" about improving the diversity that is shown onscreen as the entertainment industry moves forward.

Others pushed back against the criticism, arguing that Alba's body should not be subject to public scrutiny.
"People shaming her for the way she looks need their head examined. It's none of your business and it's also the reason women are so self-conscious of their bodies. Mind your business and your manners," one person wrote.
