Jennifer Lawrence Shuts Down Rumors That She Was the Reason Behind Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus' Split: 'Not True'

Jennifer Lawrence is not holding back.

The Hunger Games star is finally addressing the internet’s favorite conspiracy theory: that she was the “other woman” in the middle of Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus’ high-profile divorce.

The rumors reached a fever pitch earlier this year after Miley released her hit single “Flowers.” Fans were quick to point out that the gold dress Miley wore in the music video looked strikingly similar to a gown Lawrence wore at the Hunger Games premiere.

Social media sleuths immediately took to TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) to claim the fashion choice was a “subtle diss” aimed at Lawrence.

But during a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Lawrence made it very clear that she had nothing to do with the couple’s split.

“Not true,” Lawrence told Cohen before he could even finish the question. “I would love to [respond]. Total rumor.”

While J.Law admitted that she and Hemsworth did share an off-screen smooch once upon a time, she noted the timeline doesn’t fit the drama.

“We all know me and Liam, like, kissed one time,” she teased, referencing a previous admission she made on the same show years ago. “But it was years after they broke up.”

“I just assume that was, like, a coincidence,” she added regarding the infamous gold dress.

Lawrence and Hemsworth famously “grew up together” while filming the massive Hunger Games franchise. During the height of their Katniss and Gale era, Lawrence wasn’t shy about her admiration for her co-star.

“Liam’s real hot,” she previously told Cohen. “What would you have done?”

Beyond the physical attraction, Lawrence has long credited Hemsworth for helping her navigate the pressures of Hollywood. In a interview with Nylon, she revealed that he was the one who taught her how to find her backbone.

“He actually taught me how to be fair and to stand up for myself,” she shared at the time. “It’s my biggest weakness: negotiating. I’m a wimp about standing up for myself and Liam is always fair.”

She noted that his professionalism on set helped her “toughen up a little bit,” something she admitted she desperately needed during her rise to superstardom.

Today, both stars have moved on to very different chapters. Lawrence is happily married to art gallerist Cooke Maroney, with whom she shares a son, Cy.

Meanwhile, Hemsworth has been in a long-term relationship with model Gabriella Brooks following his divorce from Cyrus.

Despite the years that have passed, it seems the internet isn’t quite ready to let go of the Panem-inspired drama—but Jennifer Lawrence is officially over it.

“When five people start a rumor, and then it’s like, ‘Did you hear? Jennifer Lawrence slept with Liam?'” she joked. “I’m like, ‘No, I didn’t!'”

Jennifer Lawrence And Josh Hutcherson Are Returning To The Hunger Games Universe

The rumors are true, and months of denials have officially aged like milk. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are reportedly returning to the world of Panem, reprising their iconic roles as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in Lionsgate’s highly anticipated prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

At first, the idea seemed impossible. The new film takes place decades before Katniss ever volunteered for the Hunger Games, making the return of Lawrence and Hutcherson appear unlikely. However, the filmmakers have reportedly found a clever way to bring the beloved characters back without disrupting the timeline of the original trilogy.

The key is a framing device reportedly taken from Suzanne Collins’ latest novel. The story is expected to feature an older Katniss and Peeta spending time with Haymitch Abernathy as he tells them about the horrifying experience he endured during his own Hunger Games. This approach gives fans an opportunity to see the original characters again while allowing the prequel to remain focused on Haymitch’s story.

The revelation is especially amusing considering Josh Hutcherson’s recent comments about the project. For months, the actor insisted that he knew nothing about the upcoming film and emphasized how much he still loved the franchise. In Hollywood, however, such denials can often mean that a carefully worded confidentiality agreement is keeping the truth under wraps. Fans now have plenty of reason to laugh at those earlier statements.

Sunrise on the Reaping centers on the 50th Hunger Games, known as the Second Quarter Quell. This particular Games was designed to be especially brutal, with twice the usual number of tributes being sent into the arena. The story follows a young Haymitch as he struggles to survive one of the most devastating and psychologically intense Games in Panem’s history.

Bringing Katniss and Peeta into the story through a framing sequence could create an emotional connection between Haymitch’s past and the characters fans have followed since the beginning of the franchise. It also gives Lawrence and Hutcherson a chance to return without changing the events established in the original films.

Fans have already taken to social media to celebrate the reported reunion, with many joking about how successfully the actors managed to keep the secret. The combination of familiar stars, Suzanne Collins’ source material, and director Francis Lawrence returning has created enormous anticipation.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 20, 2026. Whether Katniss and Peeta appear only briefly or play a more meaningful role remains unclear, but their return could make this new chapter one of the franchise’s biggest cinematic events yet.
