Jennifer Lawrence is ready to bring the ultimate feminist icon back to the big screen, and the inspiration behind it is as relatable as it gets.
The Die My Love star recently sat down on The Tonight Show to dish on her upcoming Miss Piggy movie, revealing that the project actually began as a “lockdown” brain blast involving her close friends and a very modern phenomenon: cancel culture.
“So, during lockdown, one of my good friends who is not in the industry—it was also kind of around cancel culture,” Lawrence told Jimmy Fallon. “It was like both things were kind of happening at once. We were all locked up in our rooms, naughty people were being locked up in prison.”
The actress explained that while we were all stuck inside, she started thinking about how a certain high-maintenance swine would handle the pressures of today’s social media landscape.
“Miss Piggy is a feminist icon, and [my friend] said it would be so funny if Miss Piggy got canceled,” Lawrence shared. While she was quick to clarify that a public downfall is “not the plot, necessarily,” she admitted that the idea was what “got the wheels turning.”
The internet is already obsessed with the idea of Piggy navigating the world of “receipts” and apology videos. Fans on X (formerly Twitter) have been quick to weigh in, with one user joking, “Miss Piggy wouldn’t be canceled, she would cancel the internet.”
Lawrence isn’t tackling this solo, either. She has recruited her longtime pal and fellow Oscar winner Emma Stone to help bring the project to life.
While Lawrence calls herself the “ideas guy,” she revealed that Stone is the real “Muppet-head” of the duo. “Emma Stone is a shark,” Lawrence joked, explaining that she went to Stone to figure out the logistics of making the movie a reality.
The project is currently being penned by Tony winner Cole Escola, and Lawrence couldn’t be more thrilled with the direction. “Now Cole is writing it, and they’re perfect,” she gushed.
This marks a massive milestone for Miss Piggy. Though she’s been hogging the spotlight since Jim Henson debuted her on The Muppet Show in , this will be her very first solo outing.
