Jennifer Lawrence is opening up about a full-circle Hollywood moment that is currently blowing up on social media. During a recent appearance on the SmartLess podcast with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, the Hunger Games star revealed that Yellowstone mastermind Taylor Sheridan once gave her some unconventional career advice before either of them were household names.
The story goes back to Lawrence’s late teens, right as she was breaking out in ’s Winter’s Bone. At the time, her agency suggested she see an acting coach to refine her craft. That coach happened to be Sheridan, who was teaching acting to supplement his income before becoming the king of the modern Western.
However, the “lessons” didn’t last long.
“My mom took me to this guy that this agency told me to meet to help me act or whatever,” Lawrence shared. “And he told my mom, ‘Don’t put her in any acting lessons, don’t do that.'”
As it turns out, Sheridan reportedly felt he had nothing to teach the young Lawrence. He recognized her as a “singular talent” whose naturalistic style was already perfect.
“That guy, randomly, is Taylor Sheridan,” Lawrence told the hosts. “Isn’t that crazy? I guess he was an acting teacher or something back in the day.”
The SmartLess crew was quick to point out how brilliant that “rejection” actually was. While many actors are trained in “flashy performance acting,” Lawrence has built a career on a “naturalistic” approach—the kind where the actor disappears and lets the story take over.
“I love that note, ‘Don’t take her to acting school, she’ll learn how to act,'” one of the hosts remarked. “And what a great piece of advice that was.”
