Jennifer Lawrence is known for being fearless on screen, but her latest project hit a little too close to home for her loved ones.
The Oscar winner is opening up about the personal pushback she received while producing the new documentary Bread and Roses, which shines a harrowing light on the lives of women in Afghanistan under Taliban control.
Appearing on CBS Mornings, Lawrence revealed that those closest to her actually tried to talk her out of the project due to the sheer risk involved.
“My family and friends definitely encouraged me not to [produce the film],” Lawrence admitted. “It’s dangerous. Of course it is. But there’s million women whose lives are in danger.”
The comments have sparked a massive wave of support across social media, with fans on X and Instagram praising the actress for using her platform to highlight “gender apartheid” despite the threats to her own safety.
Produced alongside Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai and directed by Sahra Mani, Bread and Roses follows three Afghan women as they secretly film their protests and daily struggles after the Taliban takeover.
However, the “dangerous” nature of the film isn’t the only thing Lawrence has had to defend. The actress also addressed the viral criticism from online trolls who have questioned her qualifications to tackle such a heavy subject.
Lawrence noted that critics often point to her decision to leave school early as a reason to dismiss her voice.
“I did a Minutes interview where I explained that I dropped out of middle school, so I’m technically not educated,” she said. “And so I think a common [criticism], especially with this subject, is ‘Why is someone without an education trying to talk about politics?’”
But J-Law, ever the straight-talker, had the perfect clapback ready for the haters.
“To that I say it’s not political, it’s people’s lives,” she noted. “Also, I am educated in filmmaking, I am educated in telling stories.”
For Lawrence, the project was a direct response to the Taliban’s attempt to silence women by banning them from education past the sixth grade, working, or even walking in public without a male chaperone.
“My first reaction… was to do what the Taliban did not want us to do, which was give access and facilities to the people on the ground to capture what was happening in real time,” Lawrence explained.
She noted that the group “flourishes in secrecy,” making the footage captured by these brave women even more vital to the world’s understanding of the crisis.
The actress expressed deep empathy for the women she is championing, admitting she finds their reality nearly impossible to fathom.
“I can’t imagine not being able to take a taxi or not being able to listen to music,” Lawrence added. “I can’t imagine if just the sound of my voice was illegal.”
While she views the film as a human rights issue, she does hope it sparks a political shift by encouraging viewers to hold governments accountable and pushing the UN to recognize the severity of the situation.
Bread and Roses, which was acquired by Apple Original Films after a buzzy premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, debuts Friday in select Los Angeles and New York City theaters.
