The Hunger Games alum recently opened up about the casting process for Quentin Tarantino’s blockbuster Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and it turns out, the road to the s-set epic was paved with some seriously “audacious” online commentary.
During a candid appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Lawrence addressed the long-standing rumors that she was in the running to play the late Sharon Tate—a role that eventually went to Margot Robbie.
According to Lawrence, the director was definitely interested in working with her. “He did” want her for the film, she told host Josh Horowitz. However, she believes the “sweetie pies” on the internet might have changed the course of movie history.
Lawrence recalled that as soon as her name was whispered in connection to the project, the trolls came out in full force. The consensus from the armchair critics? She simply wasn’t “pretty enough” to play the s icon.
“And then everybody was like, ‘She’s not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate,’” she recalled of the online backlash. “And then they didn’t [cast me].”
With her trademark wit, Lawrence admitted that while she’s “pretty sure” that’s how it went down, she’s open to the idea that her memory might be playing tricks on her.
“Or it’s that thing where I’ve been telling the story this way for so long that I believe it,” she joked. “No, but I’m pretty sure that happened. Or he just was never considering me for the part, and the internet just like went out of their way to call me ugly.”
When Horowitz expressed his shock at the sheer boldness of the internet comments, Lawrence didn’t miss a beat. Sarcastic as ever, she quipped, “No, those sweetie pies?”
Of course, this isn’t the first time J-Law and Tarantino have circled one another. The actress revealed that she was actually offered the role of Daisy Domergue in the western The Hateful Eight.
That part eventually went to Jennifer Jason Leigh, who earned an Oscar nomination for her performance. Looking back, Lawrence admits she might have made a mistake passing on that one. “I turned it down. I should not have done [that],” she confessed.
While she missed out on the Manson-era madness of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the door isn’t closed on a future collaboration. Tarantino has recently pivoted away from his planned th film and expressed a major interest in live theater.
“I’m really juiced about live theater right now,” the director told Deadline recently. If Tarantino makes the leap to Broadway, we might just see Lawrence finally take her place in one of his legendary scripts—without the input of the internet trolls.
For now, Lawrence seems to be taking the old “not pretty enough” comments in stride, proving that an Oscar and a sense of humor are the best defense against social media “sweetie pies.”
