Jennifer Lawrence is known for having no filter, and her latest revelation about the power dynamics on Hollywood sets is going viral for all the right reasons.
While promoting her gritty new drama Die My Love, the Oscar winner got incredibly candid about the difference between working with male and female directors. As it turns out, J.Law has had enough of the “over-directing” she says often comes from the men behind the camera.
In a new interview with Vulture, Lawrence didn’t mince words. “There have been some times when I’ve worked with male directors where there’s this need to constantly feel like they’re directing the movie,” she explained.
According to Jennifer, this micromanagement doesn’t actually help the performance. “It’s not even really getting anything done,” she joked. “It’s just annoying.”
The actress, who has worked with some of the biggest names in the business, even redefined what the word “auteur” means to her. “When I think auteur, my mind kind of goes to controlling and… what’s that word? Neurotic!”

According to Jennifer, Ramsay built an immersive world through music and atmosphere, then did something rare: she stepped back. “Sometimes, from the discomfort of that, from the lack of her visibility, something interesting would come from it,” Jennifer shared.
The actress noted that Ramsay encouraged the “accidental” moments, like unscripted laughter, rather than trying to control every second of the shot.
Working on such a raw film while pregnant could have been daunting, but Jennifer says she felt completely supported—especially by her on-screen partner, Robert Pattinson.
“I felt really safe with him,” she said of the Twilight alum. “He’s not pervy and he’s very in love with Suki [Waterhouse]. We mostly were talking about our kids and relationships.”
The film, which Deadline calls a “brutal but beautiful portrait of a woman on the edge,” opened this weekend on nearly , screens. It’s currently looking at a $. million opening weekend, a solid start for the indie powerhouse.

For Jennifer, the project proves that sometimes, the best direction is knowing when to let the actor lead. “She would just kind of slowly walk back,” Jennifer said of Ramsay. “And then she would come out and be like, ‘That’s great, great. Yeah, do it again.’”
