“You’re aware that you’re making something that’s so offensive and so wrong,” she shared candidly about the project.
The actress admitted that the script triggered a mix of nostalgia and nerves. “And you have it in your mind like, ‘God, I haven’t seen a movie like this in a long time,’ but more, ‘Oh, no. Is this going to be OK?'”

Laura Benanti, who plays the mother of the -year-old Percy, says the film serves as a “cautionary tale” for parents who refuse to let go.
“If you are a helicopter parent who puts your child in such a bubble, they do not know how to exist outside of that bubble, you are going to make the exact opposite and insane choice,” Benanti told The Hollywood Reporter.
She added that the film looks at the “insane” lengths parents will go to when they haven’t given their children a “longer leash” to figure life out for themselves. “Otherwise, you’re going to end up curating their life forever.”
Matthew Broderick, who plays Percy’s father, Laird, echoed that sentiment, drawing from his own real-life experience as a dad.
Broderick, who shares son James Wilkie with wife Sarah Jessica Parker, knows exactly how hard it is to watch a child leave the nest.
“I guess what happens is when a kid goes off to school, it’s so frightening… that some parents go to any length to make that transition work,” Broderick shared.
The Ferris Bueller legend admitted that while he’s been through the difficult transition of dropping a son off at college, the parents in this movie take things way too far. “You really have to let them make it on their own,” he noted. “But these parents decide to mess with nature.”
The controversy has sparked a massive debate online, with one viral tweet noting, “I think we’ve forgotten what satire is. J.Law is clearly mocking these parents, not the kid!”
