The rd annual Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival (HSDFF) just wrapped up, and it’s safe to say the “vibes” were at an all-time high. Between heavy-hitting producers like Jennifer Lawrence and the Clintons, and some seriously emotional world premieres, social media has been flooded with highlights from North America’s longest-running documentary fest.
The biggest buzz of the week? A powerful new documentary titled Zurawski v Texas. Executive produced by the ultimate “girl power” trio—Jennifer Lawrence, Hillary Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton—the film tells the harrowing stories of women who sued the state of Texas after restrictive laws nearly cost them their lives.
“I think that film is really going to hit Academy voters in their hearts,” festival executive director Ken Jacobson told Deadline. And the fans agree! TikTok is already surfacing clips of the film’s Impact Award win, where plaintiff Amanda Zurawski appeared in person, leaving the audience in awe.
But the most emotional moment of the entire festival didn’t come from a Hollywood star. It happened during the world premiere of American Coup: Wilmington .
The film uncovers the shocking true story of a violent coup against a multi-racial government in North Carolina. In a moment that had the room pin-drop silent, a descendant of the white people who staged the coup stood on stage alongside a descendant of the Black victims.
“We had a really amazing and emotional Q&A with everyone,” Jacobson noted. It was the kind of raw, human connection that social media users on X (formerly Twitter) are calling “essential viewing” and “utterly heartbreaking.”
If you’re looking for a little more star power, the festival also screened Luther: Never Too Much, a deep dive into the life of the legendary Luther Vandross. Directed by Dawn Porter—who literally just came from the White House after receiving the National Medal of Arts from President Biden—the film served as the perfect high note to close out the event.
And for the Martha Stewart fans? Yes, the domestic queen herself was a topic of conversation thanks to R.J. Cutler’s new doc, Martha. Between Stewart’s kitchen tips and the high-stakes political drama of The Last Republican (starring former GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger), there was truly something for everyone.
Jacobson, who has led the institute for two years now, admitted he was “blown away” by the energy this year. “In the planning stage you have these ideas, but not until you get to the festival do you know if people are going to show up,” he said. “And both things have happened.”
While Hillary and Chelsea were busy on the campaign trail this year, Jacobson is already manifesting a Clinton homecoming for future festivals. After all, Hot Springs is where former President Bill Clinton spent his youth!
