EastEnders star Tony Way will be returning to the BBC soap over 20 years after he last appeared in Walford, with the actor set to make a comeback as part of Zoe Slater’s highly-anticipated exit storyline.
Way, who is known for his work as Lenny in Netflix sitcom After Life, previously played Nick on the soap in 2004, and it has been reported by The Sun that he will be returning as part of the arc involving Zoe.
Not much is known about Way’s return, though it is said to be a short stint in Albert Square. It is also unclear if the actor will be reprising his role as Nick, or if he will be playing a new character altogether.
EastEnders declined to comment when contacted by Digital Spy.
In addition to After Life, Way has also worked with Ricky Gervais on Extras, Life’s Too Short, Derek and Alley Cats, while he also had a recurring role as Chestnut in fantasy sitcom Zapped.
Zoe’s exit storyline comes after it was announced in July that Michelle Ryan would be departing the soap just over a year following her comeback, with it being rumoured at the time that the character was set to be killed off.
Though this hasn’t been officially confirmed, stars from the soap – and notably those who portray members of the Slater family – have been spotted filming a funeral in recent weeks, with Zoe expected to be the character who’s being mourned.
Regarding Ryan’s departure, a BBC spokesperson told Digital Spy: “We can confirm that Zoe Slater will be departing EastEnders later this year. We wish Michelle Ryan all the best for the future.”
“However, we never comment on future storylines as we don’t want to spoil it for the viewers,” they added, while a separate source explained that the storyline had “been in the works for some time”.
“With such an iconic character, Zoe’s exit is never going to be without drama, but bosses are keeping tight-lipped about how she leaves the Square,” they continued. “But, as always with the Slaters, it’s not going to be quiet.”
Ian Beale Faces 15 Years Behind Bars After Brutal Attack on Gray
Ian Beale has never exactly had an easy life in Walford, but his latest chapter may be one of his darkest yet. The longtime EastEnders favorite is currently behind bars, struggling to survive a prison sentence after becoming caught up in a brutal confrontation involving Gray Atkins. And although the immediate danger surrounding Gray appears to have settled for now, Ian’s own future remains surrounded by questions.
Could Ian really be facing a lengthy 15-year sentence? Or is there already a surprising escape route waiting for him?
New behind-the-scenes photographs have given fans a reason to believe that Ian Beale’s prison ordeal may not last quite as long as expected. Adam Woodyatt, who has played Ian for decades, has reportedly appeared in recent filming-related images alongside several of his co-stars, creating speculation that his return to Albert Square could be much closer than viewers originally imagined.
The pictures were shared by Alice Hague, known for playing Vicki Fowler, on her Instagram stories. Among those appearing in the photographs were Stephen Aaron Sipple, Letitia Dean and Laura Doddington, all gathered inside the café. However, it was the unexpected appearance of Adam Woodyatt that immediately caught the attention of EastEnders fans.
Because the BBC soap generally films its episodes several weeks before they actually air, Ian’s presence in these behind-the-scenes pictures could be a major clue. If production is running roughly eight weeks ahead of transmission, his return could potentially happen as early as October.
That would be a huge development for a character whose current storyline has left his future hanging in the balance.
Ian’s return also makes sense when looking ahead at the show’s major storylines. Viewers already know that he is expected to have an important role in events at the beginning of 2027, following his appearance in the New Year’s Day flash-forward episode. During that episode, Ian reluctantly agreed to serve as Max Branning’s best man, placing him right in the middle of another major Walford mystery.
But there is still one enormous question surrounding Max’s future.
Who will he actually marry?
At present, Max is engaged to Ian’s former wife Cindy. However, EastEnders has never been a soap where engagements guarantee a wedding. Plenty can happen between an engagement and the big day, particularly when secrets, betrayals and old relationships are involved. Ian’s possible return could therefore place him dangerously close to another explosive family drama.
And while Ian’s prison situation continues to generate speculation, another major storyline is unfolding around Denise Fox, whose condition has left the Fox-Truman family desperately searching for answers.
Denise is currently fighting a devastating battle after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. She has already undergone two intensive rounds of chemotherapy, but unfortunately, the treatment has failed to produce the results doctors had hoped for. With her condition worsening, a stem cell transplant has become an increasingly important possibility.
The situation becomes even more frightening when Denise develops a severe chest infection. Doctors ultimately make the difficult decision to place her into a medically induced coma, hoping that doing so will give her body the best possible chance to recover.
With Denise unable to fight for herself, her family are left scrambling to find another solution.
Kim Fox becomes determined to locate relatives who could potentially be suitable stem cell donors. Her search eventually leads to a shocking discovery: Denise has a half-brother she never even knew existed.
His name is Darnell Larson.
The discovery changes everything.
Kim finds evidence of Darnell through an ancestry website, giving the family a possible new avenue of hope. Jack Branning joins the desperate search, and before long, the two begin trying to track down the mysterious man whose existence Denise never knew about.
But finding Darnell proves far more difficult than expected.
Kim, despite her confidence with social media, struggles to uncover any current information about him. All she can initially find is an old photograph. The lack of an online presence makes the situation even more worrying, with Kim questioning whether Darnell could have died or simply disappeared from public view.
Howie then raises another possibility. If Darnell has children, perhaps one of them could potentially be a suitable donor.
Jack, however, is unwilling to sit back and wait.
Desperate to save Denise, he decides to take matters into his own hands. Chelsea suggests that Jack might be able to use police resources to uncover Darnell’s whereabouts. Jack knows that doing so could jeopardize his career, but his fear of losing Denise ultimately pushes him into making an extreme decision.
While at The Vic, Jack admits to Max that he went to the police station and managed to obtain Darnell’s address.
Max immediately warns him about the consequences.
Jack could be putting his entire career at risk, but he refuses to back down. In his mind, there is no alternative. Denise is lying unconscious in hospital, and every moment could matter. Jack believes that saving her is worth taking the risk, regardless of what might happen to him afterward.
Fortunately, Kim soon manages to make a breakthrough of her own.
After speaking with her mother, she discovers that Darnell works as a science teacher in Wood Green. She then manages to obtain his phone number through the school, finally giving the family a direct way to contact him.
Eventually, Jack and Kim arrange a meeting with Darnell.
At first, Darnell seems genuinely excited by the discovery that he has a sister he never knew existed. The revelation opens the door to an entirely new part of his family history, and he appears curious about meeting these relatives.
But Darnell has absolutely no idea why Jack and Kim are so desperate to find him.
His initial reaction is therefore one of excitement rather than fear. He is naturally trusting and open-minded, and instead of immediately questioning the strange circumstances surrounding the meeting, he becomes fascinated by the possibility of connecting with a family he never knew existed.
There is even something heartbreaking about his optimism.
Darnell does not initially understand why Denise herself isn’t there to meet him. Eventually, however, Jack and Kim are forced to tell him the truth.
Denise is critically ill.
The news completely changes the atmosphere.
Darnell agrees to accompany them to the hospital, but seeing Denise in such a serious condition proves far more overwhelming than he could have anticipated. He has only just discovered that he has a sister, and now he is immediately confronted with the possibility that he could be the person capable of saving her life.
The emotional pressure becomes too much.
After the encounter, Darnell suddenly leaves the hospital.
His reaction is not necessarily because he feels betrayed by Jack and Kim. Instead, he appears to be struggling with the sheer emotional weight of everything that has happened. In the space of a very short time, he has discovered an unknown family, learned that he has a sister, and then been confronted with the terrifying reality of her illness.
As the storyline develops, viewers are also expected to discover more about why hospitals are particularly difficult and emotionally triggering places for Darnell. That revelation could provide important insight into his reaction and explain why he finds the situation so difficult to handle.
Darnell is portrayed by Christopher Colquhoun, an actor known for appearances in productions including Absentia and Fleabag. Fans may also remember him from Casualty, where he played Registrar Simon Kaminski between 2002 and 2004.
While Denise’s battle continues, other huge changes are also coming to Walford.
The Slater family are facing a turbulent period, with Zoe’s funeral scenes recently filmed. Meanwhile, Rob Kazinsky has been confirmed to return permanently as Sean Slater, nearly two decades after his previous full-time stint on the soap.
His return promises to bring another wave of emotional chaos to Albert Square. Kazinsky has explained that he wanted to come back partly because of the fans who have supported him throughout his career, but also because he wanted to do it for himself. He described returning to Walford as feeling like coming home, making it clear that he is excited to bring Sean’s distinctive personality and emotional intensity back to the show.
With Sean returning, the Slaters facing major changes, Denise fighting for her life and Darnell struggling with the impossible decision placed in front of him, EastEnders is setting up an incredibly dramatic run of episodes.
And then there is Ian Beale.
If Adam Woodyatt’s appearance in the behind-the-scenes photographs is truly connected to upcoming filming, fans may not have to wait much longer before Ian walks back into Albert Square. Whether his prison sentence is reduced, whether circumstances change, or whether his return is connected to another unexpected twist remains unclear.
One thing is certain: Ian’s story is far from finished.
After everything he has endured behind bars and the fallout from his confrontation with Gray Atkins, his eventual return could have enormous consequences for the people around him. His connection to Cindy, Max and the wider Beale family could once again pull him into the center of Walford’s biggest secrets.
So while Ian may currently be serving time, these latest clues suggest viewers should not count him out just yet.
The question now is not simply whether Ian Beale will return.
It is what kind of Ian will walk back through the doors of Albert Square when he finally does.
